Interesting. I think if you’re going to do a reboot, then the only point is if you change stuff and make it genuinely new. Eg no police box, no daleks, no unit. Just go to the core of a stranger in a time machine

Some thoughts on high streets based, entirely parochially, on where I live (Bristol). 1. Income really matters Ultimately, the nice shops - coffee, gelato, hardware, little restaurants, boutiques etc. - are in places where people can afford them. You need to Baumol money into people’s pockets

2. Leisure is an increasingly important use of the high street Bristol’s traditional shopping centre - Broadmead - is a bit run down (post-war redevelopment) and got too much capacity added to it in 2008 (Cabot Circus). It has been struggling for a long time BUT it is beginning to change…

Doug is absolutely correct, and UK climate advocates need to take this seriously. There has been a wave of recent comments criticising CCS that spectacularly miss the central dynamic: fossil fuel interests do not want to do it! Climate folks need to call this bluff, not hand O&G an easy exit.

Generally there’s not been many environment secretaries that have made a huge positive impact in recent memory unfortunately. Splitting out climate has been good for climate but has left a department which isn’t on the priority list for many PMs

I can see the attraction of both, although 1 especially has political issues. But neither looks like a big shift in policy to me, and both are likely to slow down the pace of change and delay any benefits in terms of reduced costs and increased energy security

Eliot Whittington @whittso.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Likely to look that different in near term effects and tbh I think the government is slowly tilting that direction anyway. unfortunately this is all so politicised that the actual choices don’t feel anything like as nuanced as that.

So it doesn’t feel to me that many of the critics of the current path are interested in “carry on in this direction, go a bit slower, maybe a bit less wind and extend the life of some old gas”. I would concede that that’s a reasonable option we should be able to consider but it’s not one that is

Sure but to get that expanded power supply you still need more generation and grid and those are the costs people are complaining about

Eliot Whittington @whittso.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Wind and solar are the cheapest options. They aren’t cheap because we need to pay for the capital expenditure. We could be renegotiating the older CfDs which are tangibly a bad deal now. But we still need to build new energy and I don’t actually see any sensible alternative being argued.

Eliot Whittington @whittso.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Agree with Simon here(unsurprisingly). A lot the discussion around UK energy policy seems to be predicated on the idea that there’s a big cheap energy lever that is going unpulled because of ideological attachment to net zero. But we need to invest in new infrastructure and it will cost money.
