When we consider children in cultural evolution, we tend to cast them as recipients of adult culture. In our BBS target article, @sheinalew.bsky.social & I argued there's more: through 'peer cultures', children actively drive cultural adaptation. Our final paper + a rich set of responses is out now!

It's horrible to have to gauge your life by harm reduction. It's shitty to always view your actions not as good but as less catastrophic than they might be. All the while, these brutal systems cause shocking levels of harm every second. This is the relentless ethical horror of our times.

Interestingly, the intuition I felt and spoke from -- that embodied knowing -- is precisely the kind of thing AI, for all of its performative anthropomorphic gesturing at the simulacrum of personhood, can't do. Tech billionaires want us to believe that our embodied/human ways of knowing are useless!

As yellow jackets begin to show up, it's worth noting they have great facial recognition software and if you are calm and slow around them, you soon fade into the backdrop. I love them, but if you must remove a groundnest, place peanut butter at entrance at dusk and critters will find, eat the nest.

Really hope students understand why this is not a matter of not polluting, not using slave labour — say there could be AI models that are more or less not doing that, even though it's impossible — but of actually the whole of human self-expression at stake, so pointless to come to class otherwise.

I'll be teaching some students about the Lotka-Volterra food web model tomorrow, and this historical aside feels particularly relevant. Pretty stark that, in 1931, only 1% of Italian professors refused to sign a loyalty oath to the fascists.
In 1931, Italian university professors were required to swear an oath of loyalty to Mussolini’s fascist regime.
Out of 1,250 professors nationwide, Vito Volterra was one of only twelve who refused to take that oath.
As a consequence, he lost his position at the University of Rome.
In 1938, he was stripped of his Italian citizenship because he was Jewish.
He lived in Paris for most of his final decade.
