It's been nine years since I investigated the fake "California South University," which clumsily stole its history from the real University of Alberta: groverlab.org/hnbfpr/2017-... Imagine the fake university they could make today using generative AI to steal from hundreds of real universities.
A satirical graphic I made reading "Proud graduate of California South University" around a mortarboard hat with the Latin placeholder text "Lorem ipsum"

We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!

Hey Bluesky geologists 🧪, we've had about 60 earthquakes over the past few weeks in a pretty small area in the hills between Riverside/MoVal and Redlands (including a few >3.0 that I've felt in Riverside). Is there anything interesting going on here?

Our latest preprint on medRxiv: Identifying counterfeit medications using a $4 optical sensor meant for use in toy robots. 🧪💊🤖 www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...
Our prototype Disintegration Fingerprinting apparatus. (A) A servo drops a single pill into a water-filled cup atop a magnetic stirrer. The pill begins to disintegrate into particles (B), and an infrared optical sensor on the side of the cup detects the light reflected by individual particles as they pass the sensor (C). As the particles disintegrate and dissolve further, the number of particles detected changes (D). A plot of peak count vs. time (E) serves as a “Disintegration Fingerprint” for this pill.
