It's been nine years since I investigated the fake "California South University," which clumsily stole its history from the real University of Alberta: groverlab.org/hnbfpr/2017-... Imagine the fake university they could make today using generative AI to steal from hundreds of real universities.

Seriously, look how the new People Mover tracks (top) and walkway (left) go out of their way to *avoid* the Theme Building. If the Theme Building can't be a restaurant again, I wish the new transit infrastructure could have utilized it somehow, instead of avoiding it like it's a leper colony.

The weird emptiness of the Theme Building will be even more acutely evident when (if?) the People Mover opens. It'll be right at eye level for train riders.

We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!

I like to imagine a parallel universe where Pullman's work got the fame it deserved and I can walk around "Lyra's World" at Universal Studios...

Pullman's "His Dark Materials" books (1995, 97, 00) were contemporaneous with the first three Harry Potter books (1997, 98, 99) and arguably in the same genre, and Pullman's were vastly superior to Rowling's (to me at least), but Pullman's books attained a tiny fraction of the fame of Rowling's.

We used DF to test pills from 32 different drug products and found that it correctly identified 90% of these pills. Even when testing pills from 33 different manufacturing lots of two similar drug products, our technique still correctly identified 100% of the pills. [3/4] 🧪

The technique converts the disintegration and dissolution of a pill into a digital fingerprint that can be compared to other pills' fingerprints to find a match and determine the authenticity of the medicine. [2/4] 🧪
Our prototype Disintegration Fingerprinting apparatus. (A) A servo drops a single pill into a water-filled cup atop a magnetic stirrer. The pill begins to disintegrate into particles (B), and an infrared optical sensor on the side of the cup detects the light reflected by individual particles as they pass the sensor (C). As the particles disintegrate and dissolve further, the number of particles detected changes (D). A plot of peak count versus time (E) serves as a “Disintegration Fingerprint” for this pill.
