Next to the south side of Leabridge bridge is a pub, the "Princess of Wales" and a Grade II listed Victorian Old Schoolhouse, built in 1841, by Arthur Ashpitel and gifted in perpetuity by his family for the free education for the children of "transient boatmen and bargees".

Walthamstow Palace Theatre programme, 1909. The Palace opened in Walthamstow High Street in 1903 and was a popular venue on the music hall circuit. From 1952 it was a drama playhouse, but this did not flourish. The Palace closed in 1954 & was demolished in 1960. #MusicHallVarietyDay #MHVD2025

The Ilford Hospital Chapel is open this Saturday from 10am until 2:30pm. The last time I was in there I spotted a memorial plaque to Thomas Harvey who was an auctioneer & estate agent whose office was on the other side of Ilford Hill!

Was Walthamstow’s Vinegar Alley named from a local plague pit? Recent features claim so, but appear to lack supporting evidence to date. In 1973 A D Law wrote 'so named since at least the 18th century, but no satisfactory explanation has yet been found'. @arascot.bsky.social #ArchiveMyths #Archive30

When I was a nipper, my dad - an active trade unionist - took me to see the 'Memorial for Heroic Self-Sacrifice' in Postman's Park, not far from St Paul's. It was moving and inspiring to see working class folk (many of whom where children) being celebrated for their bravery #London #workingclass

Marsh St Congregational Church burial ground c1970s. Just out of sight is grave of Sarah Razafy, Malagasy Christian refugee in Walthamstow 1839-40. She died here aged 21. All buried here were reinterred at Chingford Mount Cemetery c1980 but gravestones were not preserved. #HiddenHistories #Archive30
