Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

Made a cream sauce to have with some cute pumpkin-shaped pasta for dinner tonight, along with a lovely round challah from a local bakery -- and of course, apple cider. Shanah tovah, all! May 5787 bring us one step closer to a world where all are treated with dignity and respect.
A photo of the meal described above. The challah is flanked by pomegranates and a small gourd.

As an extremely talkative ADHD (and autistic, but I feel like the ADHD really hits me here) extrovert I have struggled my whole life with feeling like the most annoying person in the room. Sometimes because people have explicitly told me that I am. It's rough!!

If you ever feel bad for mixing up the terminology for different centuries, please know that I, a History PhD student, managed to mess up introducing myself at my department orientation yesterday by saying I study the 15th and 16th centuries when I meant the 1500s and 1600s.

First day of orientation, so I'm counting this as the first day of my PhD! Nervous and excited and all the emotions at once, if I'm being honest, but so so grateful to be here and to have this opportunity.

Today my partner and I found the EXACT cute Rifle Paper Co. rug we've been coveting for our place at HomeGoods for less than half the online retail price, so that's today's win.

Rhode Island state beaches have some incredibly cool beach wheelchairs for accessibility, so that was definitely the highlight of our beach day today.

Took my queerplatonic partner to urgent care around the time her ME/CFS symptoms first developed. She was barely conscious (and I was distraught), but the person we saw there was more concerned with whether she and I were "just friends" When I say that I felt aromantic rage...

We're looking at adopting a couple cats from an out of state rescuer, and got asked if we'd like to do a Zoom call with them. Now, realistically, I am sure this is more of a way for the rescuer to vet us than it is for us to meet the cats. But it is also really, really funny.

Today everyone — EVERYONE — should take a moment and read Ray Bradbury's four-page short story from 1950.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of
Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr.
Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable,
as are the water, gas, and light bills."

Moving expenses have, perhaps predictably, hit us harder than we were expecting. I won't get my first stipend payment until the end of Semptember, and my partner's disability checks aren't quite enough for us to get by until then. If you can help, we would appreciate it so much.

We had a fiasco with the first movers we hired and had to go with another company -- who were great, but also significantly more expensive. All this has definitely put a strain on our moving budget. If you're able to help at all, or even just spread the word, it would be hugely appreciated!
