Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin now has a YouTube channel about Minecraft, with a thumbnail that made me wonder whether he was now an urbanist, as well. I wasn’t expecting that. youtu.be/_h_pQ1-5iQg

Me, in @bloomberg.com : In Singapore, residents need to bid $100k+ for a 10-year "right" to own a car. Draconian? Maybe. But the country's Vehicle Quota System has ensured that transit—not cars— is the top travel mode. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

The Right To Buy a Car? In Singapore, It Will Cost You.
The city-state’s unique vehicle quota system has made it one of the world’s most expensive places to buy a new car. Here’s how it works — and why it’s unlikely to succeed elsewhere.

Cockles warmed today, as I learned that Danny Westneat of the @seattletimes.com reads @theurbanist.org. (I'm subscribed to both.)
Excerpt from Danny Westneat's Seattle Times column, with the first sentence of the fourth paragraph highlighted. The text:

The average home in Clyde Hill, population 3,100, is worth $4.3 million. The typical lot is at least 20,000 square feet. It’s not exactly a hardscrabble kind of place.

Yet this Gold Coast town in the richest part of the Eastside is … going bankrupt?

“I call it ‘school bus going over a cliff,’ ” Wayne Burns, a business executive who served on a fiscal committee for Clyde Hill, told the City Council last week. “The city is going to run out of cash sometime between 2029 and 2030. The city would go bankrupt.”

I learned of Clyde Hill’s financial distress in The Urbanist, which has been covering growth and budget issues on the Eastside. It didn’t surprise me, as one by one, every city and county in the state reaches this point eventually. Even the wealthiest ones are struggling to make the math work.
