San Diego, CA under a tropical storm watch for Tropical Storm Rachel. San Diego also was affected by the 1939 Long Beach tropical storm after an intense heat wave, though on the periphery.

Isias now a major hurricane but will probably weaken some at landfall, peak surge forecast below, up to 9 feet around Pensacola.  My 1778 hurricane information from several sources clearly show the surge then was over 12 feet.

Eventual Hurricane Isaias to hit just west of Pensacola on this Friday/Saturday (Oct 9-10). On those dates in 1778, a major hurricane hit Pensacola, among strongest they ever had. Well documented from British archives, I got from trips to London.

I got 13 S Carolina October hurricanes for the last 313 years, so October hurricanes are rare. Quite a drop in the latter half of the month.

I got a marginal cat 1 hurricane for GA/SC (probably came from the Bahamas and skirted FL) for Oct. 1, 1820. Only got plantation diaries and newspapers, no detailed ship logs. That is routine for a lot of antebellum S Carolina storms.

This storm was a Nor'easter, probably stronger than the one that will occur this weekend, But it was definitely not a hurricane tropical wise.

I had mentioned that I have some suspected strong Nor'easters in September for the Northeast USA in my earlier records. This is one of them, from the NY Daily Advertiser, around September 20-23, 1819.  I have instrumental records that demonstrate the storm was not tropical, and it lasted too long.

Likely rare September Nor'easter later this week off New England. If near the coast, could pack gusts up to hurricane force. I got a number of such storms in the older historical record, takes a lot of effort to analyze the data closely to know whether it is tropical or not.

I think the Atlantic season of 1864 perhaps officially the only one with no USA land impact. Mike Chenoweth and I do have a July 1864 system that came from off S Carolina and went into NC and VA, probably a minimal tropical storm but it was a storm.

German map of a typhoon in southern Japan. It made landfall a little away from my navy ships, and I currently have it as a tropical storm but may promote it now up to a typhoon.

I was told some posting big 10-15 ft waves around LA lately. The 1939 tropical storm (near a hurricane) produced 30+ ft waves for that area. Ship logs at Long Beach on the Douglas Sea Scale hourly verify this.

Probably a weak tropical storm around Oahu in early August 1864 (El Nino year) which they termed a summer Kona. I have two weak tropical storms for 1864 but none of them were a hurricane.

Hurricane Lowell to pass Kauai a little after midnight, Hawaii time. Center will pass west, but likely within 1 degree longitude, about 60 miles. Currently the hurricane force winds are about 60 miles in the radius, so Kauai should expect hurricane level impact.

Now social media buzz on a hurricane approaching California in a week. Can't say no, but a week out and only one model really suggests it at this point. My opinion, if a low end cat 1 Hurricane hit, it's not as damaging as a real strong atmospheric river in the winter.

One of the big themes for 1849 overland emigration is the mention of "desert" in the context of perceptions vs real experiences in the West. My diary tabulation, no doubt a real desert in the Humboldt... but quite a high number in SW Wyoming to Green River.

Eventual Tropical Storm Lala to impact the Hawaiian Islands this weekend. Right now, not likely to be a Hurricane partly due to somewhat lower sea surface temperatures (green color) near the islands but at upper Tropical Storm intensity can be very impactful.

Was looking at the Colusa Sun newspaper, CA 1862. Map, red star is Colusa's location The back sloughs reported 16 ft deep, but it doesn't appear that Colusa itself was flooded. 15 miles SSE, Grand Island was flooded. Not sure if Colusa has slightly higher elevation.
