Photo of the cover of "Explorers on Screen: Adventure! Danger! Romance!" Edited by Sue Matheson & Cynthia J. Miller (Edinburgh University Press, 2026) illustrated with a photograph of actor Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones on horseback. A moment of high energy, adrenaline and adventure is caught in the arrested glance of the horse's eye, which looks directly out of the image, echoed by Indiana Jones's angry look of concentrated determination and fearful concern.

Fifty years ago, Junko Tabei became the first woman to summit Everest – why do so few people know her story?
Despite the extraordinary feats of Tabei and many other adventurous women, sexism and misogyny in mountaineering have persisted for decades.

The image shows a performer in a traditional costume posing outdoors. The person is dressed in a vibrant and intricate costume resembling a skeleton, featuring red and white patterns over the body. The headpiece is a large mask with skeletal features, including a prominent circular face and exaggerated eyes. The costume includes a yellow and red skirt intended to depict a tiger skin. The individual stands on a stone-paved surface with one hand on their hip. Behind them, a group of monastics sit in the courtyard.

It's a tricky one. A large hearted part of me thinks this is how they have been and how they should continue to be used. But another part of me turns pale and anxiously thinks they should be properly preserved and handled with care. I'm not sure at what point that transition should occur though.
