We now have a cover! 😊 "Explorers on Screen: Adventure! Danger! Romance!" Sue Matheson & Cynthia J. Miller, eds. (Edinburgh University Press: June, 2026). Full Info: edinburghuniversitypress.com/book-explore... #exploration #film #history #empire #place #gender 🗃️
Photo of the cover of "Explorers on Screen: Adventure! Danger! Romance!" Edited by Sue Matheson & Cynthia J. Miller (Edinburgh University Press, 2026) illustrated with a photograph of actor Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones on horseback. A moment of high energy, adrenaline and adventure is caught in the arrested glance of the horse's eye, which looks directly out of the image, echoed by Indiana Jones's angry look of concentrated determination and fearful concern.

Probably the highlight of my year, finding this in my post box yesterday. One of the best projects, with the nicest people, I’ve been involved with. ☺️ Published last month by @manchesterup.bsky.social Available Open Access here: www.manchesterhive.com/display/9781... 🗃️
A new paperback copy of 'Other Everests: One Mountain, Many Worlds' edited by Paul Gilchrist, Peter H. Hansen & Jonathan Westaway (MUP 2024), sitting on a wooden tabletop with an embroidered Turkish carpet-style bookmark poking out at the top. The book's cover image shows a predominantly blue and white photo of snow, sky, and rock; this being "the summit ridge of Everest" taken in 1953, with a trail of footprints disappearing up the ridgeline into the far distance.

The branches were filled with flocks of Mejiro (めじろ) - small sparrow-sized birds with beautiful shiny green plumage and a distinctive white ring surrounding their eyes, all feeding on the plum blossoms. (6)
A tangle of dark branches seen against a clear blue sky, covered with reddish-pink plum blossoms and a small green Mejiro bird perched in the middle (March 2024). [NB - Apologies: I've just realised I mistakenly wrote 'cherry tree' in the ALT text of the last photo; hopefully, it's obvious I meant 'plum tree.']

Just up the hill from Jindai-ji is Jindai Botanical Gardens. Visiting here on the same day as the Daruma festival, the plum blossoms were in full bloom. (5)
A close-up view of the dark, gnarly-textured bark of a cherry tree with gorgeous light pink blossoms bursting out along its trunk and branches; blue sky and green grass can be seen out-of-focus in the background (March 2024).

Daruma dolls depict the Indian monk, Bodhidharma. They are seen as a symbol of perseverance & good luck. Bought with both eyes blank, one eye is painted by the priest, consecrating the owner's wishes for the coming year, who then returns with the doll a year later, when the other eye is painted. (4)
A photo of me, wearing a woolly hat and warm coat, holding up a small red Daruma doll which we had blessed by one of the priests, with the beautiful roof of one of the temple buildings in the background (March 2024).

Jindai-ji is perhaps best known for its Daruma festival in March, when the temple is crowded with visitors who queue up to buy Daruma dolls (ranging in size from tiny to huge) and have them blessed by the temple priests. (3)
A view of Jindai-ji courtyard filled with stalls selling Daruma figures of all sizes, and crowded with people of all ages. The temple building in the background, seen here through bare tree limbs under a bright blue sky, is decorated with coloured flags.

Jindai-ji is a very picturesque temple set in beautiful grounds. Many of the trees burst into flower in April. (2)
A view of traditional wooden temple buildings seen through tree branches, some with green and some with red leaves. The tree in the middle also has a profusion of white flowers which seem to cascade in bunches from the tall boughs above.

I thought I would follow up on this post with a thread 🧵 of photos I've taken at Jindai over the course of this year. (1)
The courtyard of Jindai-ji, a Buddhist temple in Japan, surrounded by green trees, under a blue sky with fluffy white clouds on a sunny day, with groups of visitors milling about (October, 2024).

It's quite amazing, isn't it. Especially when you compare it to the boot that can be seen in this famous photograph.

Seems like it's primarily aimed at kids with an educational angle (and at their parents and elders with a whimsical one), with part of the proceeds promised to charity ...

This popped up on my FB feed today, prompting all sorts of thoughts on geography, learning, exploration, sentimentality, colonial nostalgia, Rhodes Must Fall, 'culture wars,' etc. 🤔🧐

I've only ever seen them growing at the Botanics in Edinburgh. I'd love to try growing them myself one day, but I'm not sure Tokyo is the best location for them; although I have seen other Meconopsis types growing here.
