Just finished up in work and have 2 weeks of holidays ahead; I might couple that with some time away from social media too. Gonna try to reset my brainhole and get some creative stuff working for me again! Comics? Short stories? Those unfinished Twine games I have on my laptop? Gonna try it all!

I figured out how to be happy / but I can't tell you. / You not knowing is a big part of it.

The music, man. Nothing good can happen in a show with a score like that.

I can't recall who recommended 'Sai' on Netflix to me but I'm having the worst time watching this. Haunted vibes, can't describe why parts are unsettling. 10/10 show so far.

Just noticed that someone who used to be a mutual now has blocked me. Which of my most tepid and people-pleasing posts, where I don't dare fully express real opinions because I'm afraid I'll annoy someone, could have caused that? Who knows! Oh well

That wouldn't surprise me, I got home and - after declaring this as the first Western I'll read - the back says: (the ambient tone of the universe seems to be pushing me this way and who am I to refuse!)

No idea why but it's been circling my brain for the last couple of weeks, saw a copy today and decided to just go all in on this weirdly specific & harmless intrusive thought!

I know some books are kind of like westerns, or neo-westerns, but over my holidays this might be my first time in my 43 years to *read* a straight up Western.
Cover for Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.
The picture is the back of some guy, some guy I assume is named Lonesome Dove, atop a horse... Maybe the horse is Lonesome Dove...?
Anyway, he's holding a rope that I assume is tied to a kite that hasn't made the crop to the front cover.
(Maybe the kite is the titular Lonesome Dove?)
The book is just short of 900 pages long, so probably about the length of a story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2, but presumably more generously paced.

Few willing to accept that the day has bested them. While a big coat may have been a choice at 7am, the 1pm 17° heat sun in a cloudless sky is mocking you. Accept your defeat for today, big jacket fans.

Gotta insist that everyone who doesn't know Nathan Carter or have thoughts on Crystal Swing is living in a bubble! If someone says "who?" when I talk about Red Hurley, or doesn't accept Johnny Logan as cultural touch point then they are performative contrarians.

Dave @waveyart.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It does, even just in terms of how eps are structured now, the joke/ ideas tangent density has dropped, so act 1 ideas are now the full episode, no jumping off/ veering into anything bigger/ different. It's a real "we just gotta make this last until we cross the finish line" energy.

Dave @waveyart.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It's also one of those "i also don't know the number one song in Australia/ India/ ??? right now" things. It's weird to insist that the US maintains a cultural hegemony over music and if you don't accept/ listen to it you are being obtuse & isolationist at a detriment to being a part of the world.

Like, even Warner Bros/ DC got Hans Zimmer to do the Man of Steel OST! Did Disney/ Marvel just ignore this parts of their movies on purpose? Can't even think of a good music cue in across their movies (that's not a needle drop), or pairing of music with a scene. Just background blandness

Dave @waveyart.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Occasionally my brain gets stuck on how through the growing mass of MCU movies and tv shows, they all have the blandest original soundtracks. Just an entirely forgettable soundscape. Through repetition maybe the main Avengers theme has broken out but it's still not noteworthy by itself.

How it gave itself a spin-off that seems exhausted by its own premise from episode 1 is baffling to me. It's running on fumes and then decides *now* is President Curtis' time?

8 people are needed to cover my (1) job while I'm away on leave. The first week back after I return from leave is usually spent cleaning up the issues people created in my job while I'm away.

Microsoft 365 is so bad for Co-Pilot bullshit. Offline Word would underline things in blue if the syntax was off, suggesting a comma or capital letter - now online that same blue underline suggests an entirely different sentence. & not always the same sentence if you hover over it a few times!

If I won't wade into the "top tv of the 21st century" discourse™ I'm not gonna go near the "have you heard this song?" discourse™. I don't take music cues from people who don't recognise that "Bumblin' Creed" by Padang Food Tigers & Sigbjørn Apeland is one of the best albums of the last decade.

Confident in my ability to properly tennis, I take the court. I smile at my opponent. Serena does not return the gesture. She'd be prettier if she did, I think. She serves. The ball passes cleanly through my skull, killing me instantly

Still bummed my photography group absolutely imploded because the organiser wasn't happy with now many people attended their show. Been missing going out with people and taking photos but the darker months are here, I prefer doing night photos alone, sunset at 19:13, gonna make the most of it!

There's a Dublin guy in Insta who makes videos with these, between those videos & his straight to camera stuff there is a wild shift in his accent from regular to a thick classic inner city city accent. Meta glasses are pathetic enough, cosplaying as a "Dublin in the rare aul' times" lad is worse.

Only yesterday noticed that Tower Records have a 'no Meta glasses' sign on their door and I think every business needs to do this also.

I think the important part is that it was an internal interview and I didn't lose the job I already had.

Dave @waveyart.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I once drank the entire 1.5 litre jug of water during an interview, I finished it and someone from the interview panel slowly pushed their 1.5L water towards me and I took it. The room was incredibly hot. The interview was 40 minutes long and I finished almost 3 litres of water.

This is one of those "made up for content" things that emerged from Leadership influencers on tiktok. Just empty husks yammering inanely inbetween reading email exchanges from followers/ their bosses. They may as well report on psychics who believe Teslas are secretly specialised ghost detectors.

No, I'm not creating an New York Times account to get mad that someone has a different idea of "what are the greatest tv shows" than me. (I get that experience anytime I talk to anyone about any tv shows anyway.)

Briefly met @jonronson.bsky.social years ago after he gave a talk (Psychopath Test tour?) but forgot my copy of 'Adventures with Extremists' to get signed, so buying a signed copy of his new book is a small consolation. Exactly the kind of weird, unhinged stories I wish didn't exist but still enjoy.
The cover of Jon Ronson's The Castle.
Incidentally the only book I've read in less than a week all year - not a comment on its length, just noting I have reached for it before even doomscrolling on my phone in the evenings.

I'm not reading a 66 post long thread but I'm happy for them or sorry that happened. Either way it's a chore to read any thread longer than 5 posts. If it's important enough it'll be written in literally any other format. I'll take "pieced together from audio logs in a computer game" before that.

the point of freeing yourself from the prison of ego is not getting there you’re not gonna do that. never gonna happen. the point is cultivating a practice of routinely asking “wait, I am too into my own shit here?” in every aspect of your dealings at least once or twice a day. anyhow good morning
