#PairedTexts 1. From Chalkbeat: U.S. moves up test score rankings by falling less than other countries - American 15-year-olds now score well above average in science and reading, but the global decline is alarming. 2. From The New York Times: U.S. Reading Scores Plummet on Global Exam
By Matt Barnum and Erica Meltzer

In the early 2000s, politicians and pundits were swept up in anxiety about U.S. performance on a key international test known as PISA. Delegations traveled to learn from high-achieving countries like Finland. Journalists and researchers wrote books on the topic. Leaders like President Obama bemoaned the country’s dire results.

The good news from the latest PISA results, released Tuesday, is that the U.S. has gained relative standing in recent decades. Today, U.S. students score well above average in science and reading. Math scores, long America’s weakest subject, are now on par with other developed countries.

The bad news is how this happened. The U.S. has steadily moved up largely because other countries’ scores have deteriorated faster than ours over the last decade. A bevy of data points show American students are learning less than they used to. Even U.S. PISA scores in math and reading are at or near their lowest level.Sarah Mervosh
By Sarah Mervosh
Sept. 8, 2026, 3:30 a.m. ET
The reading scores of American 15-year-olds have fallen sharply since 2022 and are near their lowest point in 25 years, according to the results of a key global exam released on Tuesday.

U.S. math scores are also among the lowest since the test began in 2000, even as students have held their ground in science.

By every measure, American students are being outperformed by students in Singapore and parts of China who had top scores on the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, taken by 15-year-olds around the world.

It is the latest warning sign for an American education system that has seen test scores fall over the last decade, starting before the pandemic.

Essentially, these ed-tech experiments have driven home what educators have long intuited: Learning is a largely social and relational enterprise, and bots have yet to replicate the value of a human touch. Teachers are still our best source of motivation for students, not only because strong ones know how to push kids to learn new things, but also because education works best when it happens in a group.
