Been s/e most of my working life and until quite recently never had enough 'spare' for it to be a option. Now in my fifties and feels too late plus, since Trump, feels like we're teetering on the edge of a crash where I might see my paltry savings disappear rapidly.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

I think everyone should see this incredible picture of Dolly Parton: it’s by Stacie Williams (asterosperma on Instagram) and it’s called The Queen of Appalachia

The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is not the only factor which makes it hard to photograph. Add dark, shiny heads and a shallow profile, and catching them sideways on (when you can't see wings or tail) involves more luck than judgement. But it's fun to try, however flawed the result.

A swallow flying from right to left with wings and tail streaming beside and behind it. Its head is dark blue and red, and its breast is white.
