Session #2 of ##WhatATanker at the school club, aka "More to Gaming than 40K". Tense stand off and the pupils were making some well thought out decisions. Stug remained hiding behind the bushes while the T34 manoeuvred to a safer position. All shots saved, tanks retreated back. #Spreadthelard

Crossfire at the club last night with my Victrix 12mm and various 3d printed vehicles. I was introducing new players and it was a huge success. Used the core game for infantry but some homebrew armour rules from balagan.info These worked really well. German counter attack failed to oust the Brits.

12mm victrix germans prepare to advance across wheat field towards village.

The sherman falls to my Panther tank on the outskirts of the village.

3d printed 1/144 scale firefly covers the approaches to the village. It had taken out 2 panzer IVs at this point but not before one of them dinged it with a glancing blow, momentarily stunning the crew (pinned). There is a stand of pinned germans in the adjacent building. That was the closest they got to capturing the village.

Another vintage Avalon Hill game at the club last night. Squad Leader scenario 1: Stalingrad. I played the Soviets and defeated the Nazi invaders. This was my first time playing this legend and I actually enjoyed it! I understand it does get a bit fiddly...

Hex map for scenario 1 of Squad Leader Board game. Brown counters are Soviets. Game in progress with Soviets about to storm and capture first of 2 buildings they need to secure victory.

The house rules from mr Balagan's page worked well. They are consistent with infantry & don't have lots of bolt on fiddly bits to slow the game. But you do need to ensure you have anti tank assets well deployed. It adds another layer of "oh sh*t I need to deal with that". Like a real battle I guess

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

My impressions of Crossfire: loved it. It was a solo learning game but the strengths really showed like the fast pace. No static firefights, lots of movement forcing players to juggle priorities. See balagan.info for house rules (tanks in particular). I think ive found my go-to WW2 rules...

Aerial reconnaissance photograph taken early afternoon showing the captured village.

Final assault as 1 and 3 platoon secure a foothold in the village and just the defenders. 2 platoon in reserve in walled orchard.

Overview of situation. 2 platoon follows up 1 platoon to occupy orchard (bottom right). 3 platoon withdraws from church (top right) and pushes through buildings to assault and capture German occupied house. German positions in blue.

3 platoon rampage through east of village. Short sharp and bloody house to house fighting.

Assault on suppressed enemy in "the red house".

0121

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

No1 platoon successfully suppresses the defenders and succeeds in capturing the walled orchard and then pushes into the village with support of a Sherman Vc.

No 1 platoon captures the orchard and prepares to assault the village.

The Vc Sherman forces the defenders back allowing elements of 1 platoon to capture buildings at the west end ofnthe village. Tank brasses positions towards the village centre.

0130

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

The British have stormed up the left flank and neutralise the Pak40. They then move into the church but come under fire. On the right flank the british attack starts to bog.

3 platoon occupy the church but come under fire from the houses.

0120

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

The game continues. 1st platoon rushes up the flank, captures the walled orchard. The Shermans, having pushed out the German platoon in the field, run into the Panther with disastrous results. However, the 6 pounder is quickly deployed and manages to knock out the Panther.

1st platoon captures the orchard on the edge of the village.

Both Shermans are knocked out by the Panther.

The 6 pounder scores a kill on the Panther.

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

The opening moves of my try out of Crossfire in 12mm (1:144). Smoke deployed and the tanks advance down the southern road.

2 inch mortar drops smoke across the road to block the Pak40 line of sights and allow the tanks to cross unmolested.

Off table 4 inch mortar drops smoke in front of German platoon covering the ploughed field on approach to the village.

The tanks go in. 2 shermans rumble up the road ready to brass up the enemy infantry.

Mg42 team weigh up the options when faced with the approaching Shermans.

0160

WarShedDad @warsheddad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

Solo try out of Crossfire rules. The plan: British to push down the right flank with tanks going in first to flush out German defenders (positions circled in blue). Liberal use of smoke to screen the advance to contact. Brits need to be wary of Pak40 on left (yellow) and Panther on right (green).

Marked up photo with arrow showing advance and enemy infantry circled in blue, pak40 on left circled in yellow and panther tank in the village on right circled in green.

No club tonight so popped over to fellow member's house for a game of Undaunted Normandy. What a clever little game. I found a lot of the reviews told me HOW the mechanics worked but not WHY so I found it difficult to get my head round it until I actually played it. Really good game.
