Something new and something old that is new again have arrived! Thanks the folks at KV Design for the outstanding service as usual! Yes, on the left is a new edition of the venerable NATO Division Commander by SPI! On the right is a new game by a Chinese designer on the Yom Kippur war.

And here are two siblings separated for and by 50 years. SPI “The Next War” and KV Design “NATO Division Commander”. The KV Design team has managed to replicate the soapbox size in width and in thickness. Height is just a tad bigger!

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Behaviours are the four things a Learning and Development team can target. Most of the budget goes on the first. Tabletop exercises build the other three, in a simulation where consequences are contained.

I advocated for this approach in simulation, force on force exercises, and live fire CAX. As a leader at any level, when you go into a training exercise it should be like you have a gun pointed at your head…you fail you suffer…now suffer doesn’t always mean replacement maybe just retraining

The biggest danger, IMO, is that you develop a system where users who are better at understanding the rubric and the rules get artificially high marks for the traits ostensibly being evaluated. Especially so when folks are coming from a speciality background (signal, logistics, etc)

Any evaluation game is simply a metric. The real value is in all the wargames, experiences, lessons learned, and decisions that lead up to it. We need to think beyond a simple evaluation game, but an ecosystem of games and experiences to prepare leaders through every stage of their military careers.

The vital part is the process that leads to the evaluation game. The wargames that leaders got to practice, make mistakes, find new ideas, and hone their craft - BEFORE any evaluation game. Just like physical fitness, it is the daily, regular work that is put in that matters most.

Personally, I argue wargames serve leaders and planners best when they are regular, iterative, and challenging. Wargames are one of the few ways to practice decision-making against a thinking adversary. Wargaming is intellectual fitness, stressing the mind to be sharper and better. 🧠

Using #wargames to evaluate military leaders is not new - stemming from the desire to identify the best talent for the next crisis. But it can be perilous, and if done poorly, it can be generationally damaging. So services are thinking deeply on how best to proceed. 🧵
