This weekend I went to my fav indie bookstore to revel in a good cup of coffee while browsing the shelves. I finished 2 Masters degrees and assorted graduate certificates in 5 years. It broke my ability to read for enjoyment and I hadn’t read anything in almost a year. Our backlogs are not terrible, but there was a period where the amateur “archivists” who controlled the collection just put stuff in boxes & labeled it “miscellaneous.” In the last two years our team of 5 has cataloged over 1000 cu. ft. of miscellaneous. Best box so far was labeled “box of old shit”

This is so true. The archive where I work was cataloging a series of records affectionately known as the “Black Hole” that were donated in the 1950s. Among our finds (that we completely didn’t know we had!!) was Benjamin Franklin’s eulogy, handwritten by the bishop who gave it.

One of my fave things in York Minster: a medieval wren stalking a spider. It reminds me that history isn't only kings and battles. Someone, centuries ago, found joy in the same things we still notice today. It's a reminder of how much we have in common over our differences.
