So much better. Drivers rarely stop here unless someone stops out

I was driving along Chester Road, Stretford the other day, when I saw a child cycling safely along the new cycle lanes. Alone, no adult with them. And I rejoiced, because this is precisely what the new lanes are FOR. 🙌 (Adults can use them too! 🤣)

This driver cut left across me dangerously from Talbot Rd to Milton Rd today. In no universe is this not careless driving. Yet I see similar most days - a total lack of respect and care that gets pedestrians and cyclists injured or killed. @walkridetrafford.bsky.social @owlernook.bsky.social

Tfgm are surveying people who are walking, wheeling and cycling along the Talbot Road corridor this week. They will be at various spots on the route so please do stop if you have time and take part in the survey or take a leaflet from them to do the survey on line later if you are short of time.

The parade of shops on the corner of Barton Road and Kingsway looks so much better now. Cycle stands were installed a while ago and now planters and bollards have been installed. It's a shame though that money has to be spent to stop pavement parking. Before and after

This is really rubbish. Once you've got past the obstruction and return to the cycle lane you're met with another unannounced sign blocking the cycle lane but facing away. It's a white arrow on a blue background, presumably to advise pedestrians to walk into the cycle lane.

When improvements are made to the experience of public transport users in an area of low car ownership, when a vehicle carrying up to 70 people is given the opportunity to get above an average speed of 10 mph and for those people to get to where they are going on time - we should celebrate

The infrastructure installed to make cycling safer is sometimes dismissed as a waste of money. Nobody uses it, nobody cycles in the rain, cyclists don't stop at red lights and they're all on the pavement. This photo tells the true story

Seymour Grove Cycleway options. Loving the geometry of this Cyclops junction.
A Cyclops junction on a proposed scheme along Seymour Grove. The cycleway elements form a slightly pinched ovoid, with large pedestrian islands.

This bollard is not good - dark even in daylight, dangerous after dark. The explanation is that it is there to force cyclists onto the shared path to the left. Never mind cyclists who want to go straight on the A56, or turn right on to Davyhulme Road East

With apologies for the very late re-posting, this is such a shame. Urmston has cycle stands outside most businesses on Flixton Road as well as the cycle stands outside the railway station, 2 sets in Eden Square and 1 set outside the library. All designed to enable and encourage cycling to the shops

We had a great day hosting our #SchoolStreets conference on Friday alongside @walkridegm.org.uk, with such inspiring speakers. It was an excellent opportunity to share good practice, and the pop-up School Street was a huge hit! Next one in October. @stocksyatlarge.bsky.social #GreaterManchester
A conference room with people sitting in chairs listening to speakers. There is a table in the background with four people sitting behind it, plus two monitors behind and above them, showing a presentation. A road with cars parked along the left. There is a red "road closed" barrier in the middle of the road, with two smiling people standing behind it wearing high-vis jackets.

There was a question on this post somewhere (else?) that is no longer visible which was where/how to resafely rejoin the main carriageway if going straight ahead towards Sale etc

Designed in danger? The segregated cycleway along Chester Road passes the junction with Christie Road. Traffic is often queued south bound because of red lights and drivers kindly leave gaps for drivers from the north bound carriageway to turn into Christie Road

70% of wheelchair users said pavement parking was a regular problem, forcing them into the road. London can ban pavement parking; why can't the rest of the country? There seems to be widespread support for it; for example, 78% of Daily Express readers back a ban. Let's do it.

Very welcome to hear the Transport Secretary using this line: “Enrique Penalosa, a former mayor of Bogota (the capital of Colombia), once said: ‘An advanced city is not one where the poor have to own a car, but one where the rich choose to use public transport’. That’s a vision I believe in.”

Call for volunteers: Friends of Oldfield Lane (Altrincham). VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ….to help give Oldfield Lane a bit of love. The friends plan to cut back the overhanging brambles and hawthorn and sweep the lane so that it is wider and better for walkers, cyclists and riders.

This is such a good podcast & from a Trafford perspective it is good to listen to the enthusiasm of Tom & Aidan for building a cohesive network from what initially looked like random bits of infrastructure. It is acknowledged that now the challenge is to keep up the momentum

Walk Ride GM has today invited Andrew Gwynne MP to join a cycle ride in his constituency, Gorton and Denton. He would experience first-hand the benefits of travelling by cycling and also appreciate why improved provision is urgently needed.
Dear Mr Gwynne,

We were concerned to read your comments about your constituent's pleas for a safer network for cycling.

We are a Greater Manchester-wide campaigning organisation with supporters in your constituency.

We would be delighted if you would join us on a cycle ride of the area so you can experience for yourself the benefits of travelling by cycling and also appreciate why improved provision is urgently needed.

Good insight into this issue. We often read comments about cycle lanes such as "it's only used by delivery riders". As if these people don't deserve to be safe while they're carrying out their jobs, delivering to "you".

Statement from Walk Ride GM on the comments made by Andrew Gywnne MP and local councillors about a local campaigner
Walk Ride GM is appalled by remarks that have come to light today from Andrew Gwynne MP and local councillors, in which they made light of a local campaigner being run over by a heavy goods vehicle. That elected representatives would joke about such a traumatic incident speaks volumes about the contempt some politicians have for road violence.

Every year, more than 80 cyclists are killed on British roads, people who set out on their bikes and never return home due to the unacceptable dangers they face. Dismissing or mocking those affected by road violence undermines the urgent need for action to make our streets safer.

It is disgraceful that instead of engaging with constituents advocating for safer roads, local politicians are ridiculing those who highlight the risks that cyclists face every day. We demand an apology from the local Labour Party in Greater Manchester for these comments and a commitment to treating road danger as the serious issue it is.

We ask the Secretary of State for Transport,
Heidi Alexander, to meet with Walk Ride GM
to discuss how the Government intends to address the concerns of campaign groups advocating for an end to road violence - starting with ensuring that their own MPs and councillors engage with the issue with the gravity it deserves.
