Feels like it should be illegal for our mortgage company to repeatedly spam call us this is pretty new and seems directly linked to their desperation over rising rates

The Dyed Diesel Waiver Has Catches Most Truckers Will Run Into
Earlier tonight, President Trump signed an executive order that temporarily allows tax-exempt dyed (red) diesel to be used on roads and highways.

I think about the IRA and how fast some modeling happened because it was able to piggyback on previous similar bills and broad understandings of the goals and (possible) outcomes, but it seems like that just doesn’t exist here?

Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
For a bill whose concept was circulating for so long why was there no public discussion or previous release of prospective text or model bills? Why should people trust this process in particular when reporting suggests the o&g piece has been sewn up for a long time, but the electricity side had not?

It was great to see a lot of improvements over the 8 years we lived at Carlin Springs and 7th Rd S! It’s wild how much crazy driving (regular rights on red from the left turn lane, someone actually crashed into Campbell, pile ups every time it snowed) we saw living on that corner

Underrated point, the IRRs upstream oil and gas guys look to achieve are way way way better than renewable projects (brief stretch where some batteries penciled great, although not *that* great), so you get these pools of private capital that can really grow while shifting all externalities

It’s crazy that in 2026 the biggest wholesale power market in the US, PJM, still reports their basic fuel mix at an hourly granularity (with separate, higher frequency wind and solar feeds) #energysky

other admin priorities have put capital markets in a worse spot for projects as well. Sure, it has been unpredictable in many ways, but at this point I’m treating all of this way more skeptically given what we’ve seen the last couple of years.

It’s not dynamic scoring bad, it was real analysis, but I keep thinking about how the IRA was sort of breathlessly modeled. 4 years later its provisions have been delayed and dismantled legally and illegally through a plethora of overt and hidden actions while

it's pretty funny to me that Dario, a vegetarian, makes an exception for shrimp, a food that was incurring enough bad environmental impacts that I had sworn it off 8 or so years before I went vegetarian this is particularly amusing in the context of all the LLMs are alive stuff

There’s a particular level of cursed where your undergrad/grad were in the beginning and aftermath of the financial crisis and federal student loan interest rates were completely decoupled from the cost of capital

I’m in a plan, not in a plan, re-certified, recertification failed, somehow in forbearance, then not, unclear timelines, lifetime payments higher on a 10-year plan than longer plans, hours on the phone, and all with federal loans at rates many times higher than the fed rate at the time

iirc the American vet association only approves of painless, humane, euthanasia, but death row executions are not something the AMA gets involved with and it’s the opposite where there’s a paralyzing agent since the killing drug is painful There’s some recent ish long form piece out there on

coalition finally coalesced. It is interesting that it’s basically the same story of GOP vs Dem with one party requiring more of a big tent coalition while the other side is a concentrated and specific interest

Our current collision of hyperscaler power demand with regulatory + wholesale market design issues in electricity doesn’t have the deepest bench to begin with and those people ain’t in congressional offices I imagine there have been many more learning conversations in the last year and maybe the

Almost a year ago I had a handful of conversations on the hill related to what eventually became this bill. What I heard at the time was that the O&G side of things had their piece sewn up, but the electricity side was fractious and uncertain on what they wanted or even the perceived benefits

The timing and the trust elements are hard enough to square individually. Together it’s even worse.

there was one large reason which was strongarming institutions into what he wanted which was clearly going to be *the* theme of Trump 2 and has been since SCOTUS deciding to carve on fed independence separately from everything else was not at all a given

When my wife got DOGE’d at the start of 2025 and we had to move I thought “well at least we’ll definitely be able to refinance this new house in the next few years, lower rates has to be something he’ll force no matter what” welp

It’s a pretty baffling statement. You’d have to be pretty unaware of wider context on why the EPA and attendant laws first came into existence and what they actually did. when I see something like that I wonder if the understanding is basically just snail darter + vibes, there’s more!

Sort of beside the point, but additional LNG export capacity further links US prices to global gas markets and ultimately raises domestic prices, which he would definitely know if he thought about it for one second

main thing I missed so far were events on the calendar that aren't sign-posted in town, so, for example, spectating other matches, didn't realize the game wouldn't let me know those were happening!

has there ever been a moment where the third way shtick has rung more hollow? I get that the overwhelming asymmetry at play in terms of policy pursuits makes it pretty impossible to thread that tired middle path, but it also makes equivalency in fault and continuing on look ridiculous

Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I don't get the sense that many people at the table could confidently talk about eastern/western interchange integration in SPP, interregional climatological reliability benefits, moving "capacity" from regions with LSE RA requirements to an auction construct, etc etc fractiousness vs drill more

Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
haha yeah absolutely didn't read your take as transmission = palatable, but that is what I see/hear out there and it's not just the theory of the case in terms of benefits, but, like, hey, how does this work in the context of market expansion, resource adequacy, equipment lead time etc.

Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I just can’t get over the credulity
120
Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Also, just, come on. This all comes back around now? When polling is absolutely in the toilet for a Republican Congress whose only “win” was cutting services and support such that they don’t even campaign on it? The timing isn‘t subtle

Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
A federal bill doesn’t solve local and state barriers either, which are only becoming more significant
130
Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
This means the theory of the case on one side is a lot more uncertain and confused, i.e., easier to take advantage of by the unified side This is an admin (and congress+scotus!) that has been happy with pocket vetos, spurious roadblocks, fake emergencies, etc., to kill electricity projects
140
Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
My understanding from conversations on the hill is that the oil and gas side of things bas had their half of the bill ready for a long time while the electricity side is a more heterogeneous group with varying priorities so agreement on specifics or even possible benefits varies substantially
130
Connor @waldoch.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I still haven’t heard a concrete argument that could beat other concerns despite the years of discussion on this, “but think of the transmission” has never been remotely satisfying to me (Not saying this against you, I would also love many more large regional lines)

Many more places for ground source heat pumps, but I find it difficult to believe they won’t pretty much always be the most expensive option for a home. I worked a bit on including soil thermal conductivity into sizing models to help with cost back in grad school, they’re just so much $$$
