Still don’t have a food hall, businesses fleeing downtown for the suburbs every day it seems, but an industrial scale poop incinerator to process waste from the suburbs? That we can do. WINNING!

Pretty sure I can draw a straight line from my childhood love of the Streets of Old Milwaukee to my current passion for dense, walkable neighborhoods, with street level interest. This place is still an immersive gem. See it before it’s gone.

Nice story about my district council, the West 7th/Fort Road Federation, and all the grants we’ve distributed to small businesses to make West 7th just a little less bleak in the face of decades of local govt disinvestment.

Letters: About Mayor Kaohly Her’s ‘vision’ thing
“St. Paul lost its soul when businesses slowly left over the years and downtown became empty, sending the tax burden to our homeowners,” the writer says.

Every so often we have glimmers of sanity. This proposed ordinance was poorly written, redundant given administrative citations we just passed, and would have placed further downward pressure on residential development in St. Paul. Well done, Councillors.

Yes. THIS is the question. St. Paul cannot shoulder the burdens of poverty, addiction, and housing costs for the entire metro/state/upper Midwest.

When you see two years
separated by a dash
it can mean two things:
birth and death dates, or a specified period. So when you see: 1776–2026,
know that this means
the specified period
of the semiquincentennial,
but it probably also feels like it means the other thing.

Excellent piece. It all needed to be said. I was exposed to “queer theory” while completing my undergrad in women’s studies in the early 2000s. It is intellectual drivel and drove me to lifelong adherence to lesbian radical feminism. I will never apologize for this. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/30/o...

From 1925: a prediction that, as more people choose to drive to the countryside, cars will end up destroying the very beauty that people go to see.
This is a satirical cartoon titled "Motoring and Our Beautiful Countryside" by W.K. Haselden, published in 1925.It highlights the irony of motorists destroying the very scenic beauty they drive out to see by demanding infrastructure improvements. The panels demonstrate a progression from idyllic country lanes to suburban sprawl, with the final panel depicting a dystopian landscape dominated by wide roads and minimal greenery.

Listen: when you hear it reported that this week Paris, France, has seen more days above 40°C than it had in the years from 1872 to 2019, it is vital to understand that this is not the end of the world, rather it is a sign that the world we knew has already ended.

A killer 1940s robot zapping two large domes with eye-lasers; trapped under the domes are two children, taken from 1910s photos of child laborers; one, a little girl in a straw hat, is holding two heavy buckets. The other, a newsie with a shoulder bag, is picking his nose. The background is the collapsing pillars seen in Dore's engraving of The Death of Solomon.

They're literally the dept of transpo & they have no interest in improving how they operate or see the future
