I did see that and yes, it’s enraging. Seems like a four year sentence could have been for the drug charges alone? I don’t understand what is going in our “justice system.” Victims seem to be the last priority in multiple recent cases.

It would be very sad if that building were demolished. It was a pretty significant music and restaurant space for the Rondo Community in the 50s and 60s. Quick overview here. The preservationists have a ton more info. twincitiesmusichighlights.net/venue/road-b...

Loved this banger, too: “Waiving it case-by-case instead, for whoever tells the best story that week, isn’t that process. It’s a shortcut dressed up as due diligence, and this hearing’s own record shows it.”

City staff and planning commissioners not apparently know their own plans and policies, planning commissioners rubber stamping poorly written staff recommendations, commissioners not reading testimony. It’s a badly broken system. Taghioff was the only bright-ish spot for us, too.

Bravo! That was an amazing piece. Thank you for the deep dive. Much of this rings familiar with our battle to stop prime riverfront land at a neighborhood node being turned into a trash depot.

St. Paul is really good at distributing the gator bags, not so much at actually using them. I see so few of them ever in actual use, that I think people believe they are magical self-filling water bags.

Great piece. THIS right here was such a good quote. That was really one of the core objectives of St. Paul’s new tree protection ordinance: trees are part of our infrastructure and need the same consideration in planning and protection as anything else.

Might want to read the article bc this policy update addresses that very issue. Before this, the Mayor could (and did, in Melvin’s case) basically unilaterally and behind closed doors decide a huge municipal contract with no input or visibility from the city council or public. This corrects that.

w7thmeg.bsky.social @w7thmeg.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I got ya. I don’t think any councilors supported the sweeps, but some were working behind the scenes to get the county to do its job, while others (like CM Kim) drove a few people to another encampment and got social media visibility.

Probably no major differences in values or policy goals, but Rebecca actually understands what is possible in local government (while still being deeply ambitious and action oriented). Maria makes very loud, rousing speeches about things that are way outside the role of a county board.

w7thmeg.bsky.social @w7thmeg.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I’m in west 7th and Maria has been completely inaccessible to our neighborhood and offered zero support until just this year. The first time she ever showed up to a district council event or returned one of our messages was this spring, once she became a county candidate.

w7thmeg.bsky.social @w7thmeg.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
But this really highlights one of the key differences between Maria and Rebecca. Rebecca has actual experience and achievements in local government, while Maria is more of an activist. Not saying one role is better than another, but the job is county commissioner. Rebecca is far more qualified.

Rebecca was busy at work, drafting and passing multiple ordinances restricting SPPD from working with ICE, banning face coverings by officers, and prohibiting any use of municipal property for ICE staging. Also multiple renter and small business support measures.

But thank you for acknowledging that Melvin Carter closed multiple encampments, too, leading to the nightmares at Pig’s Eye. This seems to be missing from a lot of the vitriol passing as dialogue. One key difference is that Carter only gave 72 hours notice and did it in January.

Every so often we have glimmers of sanity. This proposed ordinance was poorly written, redundant given administrative citations we just passed, and would have placed further downward pressure on residential development in St. Paul. Well done, Councillors.
