Yeah I was an avid HP reader as the series was coming out! It was really fun to be part of a big thing! But they’re not very durable, as literature, and then the JKR of it all turns the whole apparatus just fully radioactive.

HP qua IP, on the other hand — its still-alive creator explicitly said she uses her HP income to fund anti-trans hate, and that she views support of HP as support of her position, so I think it’s inarguable that engagement with it is immoral at best.

When fans describe what they love about HP, what people who’ve read other books hear is “I’ve never read other books”—bc what they’re describing is virtually never unique to HP, and almost always represented or explored better elsewhere. HP isn’t the best at anything except merch.

Rowling is a shitbag but also! HP is NOT GOOD. This isn’t one of those mildly nuanced “oh but Polanski is a genius” situations — HP is derivative, mediocre, critically insubstantial, even with a generous poptimism handicap. Its single outstanding quality as a cultural artifact is its ubiquity.

French Historian Marc Bloch, 1940. This is from his book Strange Defeat that tried to make sense of why the French elite succumbed so seemingly easily to the Nazi takeover. Bloch, a nerdy middle aged Sorbonne professor, joined the resistance and was executed by the Gestapo in 1944.

By birth I am a Jew, though not by religion, for I have never professed any creed, whether Hebrew or Christian. I feel neither pride nor shame in my origins. "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously" is a sentence from a 1957 Noam Chomsky book as an example of a sentence that is grammatically well-formed, but semantically nonsensical. But a creative writing competition was able to produce some poems that actually made it make sense. This is my favourite.

Behold the pent-up power of the winter tree;
