When West Germany annexed East Germany in 1990 it had no desire to update its regressive policies on gays (or trans people/abortion/etc.) and GDR politicians had to fight to ensure §175 (still being used in West Germany to prosecute gay men for having sex) wasn't used in former East German states.

Never forget. Allende was overthrown on September 11, 1973, leading to years of horror imposed on Chile by Pinochet in the interest of Western states and corporations. Chile became a violent neoliberal experiment led by US-educated liberal economists while living standards declined immensely.
