Please know that this is one of my few legitimate areas of actual, high-level professional expertise: Kicking the healthiest people off of a health insurance program will bankrupt it. Not 'could;' not 'might,' not 'probably," but absolutely will, with mathematical certainty.

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!

I will say some of the push for AI in writing is how a lot of non-AI writers think the point of writing is to get published and no, the point of writing is to remove the weird little thing from your body and teach it tricks

And the really sad thing that they don't get about it is that Harry Potter will never be that again, either. And a big part of why Harry Potter will never be that again is because JK Rowling poisoned it all on her own.

The reason that the Harry Potter apologists won't just read better books is because they're not looking for good stories...if they were, they wouldn't have glommed on to Harry Potter. They're looking for the camaraderie and social phenomenon that Harry Potter was in the 2000s.

The best way to support authors you love is to preorder their books. If that isn't an option for you financially, reach out to your local library expressing interest in forthcoming titles. For indie and smaller presses, sales keep the publisher's doors open.

It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."

fwiw, one reason young people are more attracted to egalitarian philosophies is that no young person is actually rich. children don't own any property in their own name. this is not just a tecnicality; it's a material reality that has realy material consequences. 1

"But this never happens in [country]!" Yes it does. Wealthy nations with strong regulatory states still have a lot of outbreaks. Because rich nations also have lots of food, & it's not possible to 100% eliminate all problems. Rich countries also have enough scientists to notice the outbreaks.
