This paper shows that immigration enforcement can _increase_ crime. Undocumented immigrants already have the lowest crime rate, but tough-on-immigration policy makes immigrants less likely to report crime. So immigration enforcement worsens the problem it was ostensibly meant to solve
Community Engagement and Public Safety: Evidence from
Crime Enforcement Targeting Immigrantst
By FELIPE GONÇALVES, ELISA JÁCOME, AND EMILY WEISBURST*
We study the role of victim reporting in the production of public safety.
We examine the Secure Communities program, a crime-reduction policy that involved police in detecting unauthorized immigrants and increased deportation fears in immigrant communities. We find that the policy reduced the likelihood that Hispanic victims report crimes to police and increased offending against Hispanics. The number of reported crimes is unchanged, masking these opposing effects. We show that reduced reporting drives the offending increase and provide the first elasticity of offending to victim reporting in the liter-ature, calculating that a 10 percent decline in reporting increases offending by 7.9 percent. Hi friends, we have a new publication in Adversity and Resilience Science doi.org/10.1007/s428... on parental childhood adversity, parenting-specific emotion regulation, and child mental health in SGM parents w/ @vjrp.bsky.social @mingcong.bsky.social @antoniayuxinhua.bsky.social and Kiyan Irani.
doi.org
Differential Associations from Parental Childhood Adversity to Child Psychopathology: Evidence from Sexual and Gender Minority Families - Adversity and Resilience Science
Abstract Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to intergenerational transmission of psychopathology, yet limited work has examined how distinct dimensions of parental ACEs (i.e., threat and deprivation) interact with parenting-specific emotion regulation (ER) in relation to child outcomes in sexual and gender minority (SGM) families. We applied linear regression to examine how threat- and deprivation-based parental ACEs are differentially associated with child psychopathology, and how these associations vary by parenting-specific ER strategies among 568 SGM parents of children aged 3–17. Parental deprivation-based ACEs, suppression, and rumination predicted more child psychopathology symptoms whereas adaptive parenting-specific ER predicted fewer symptoms. Furthermore, low suppression amplified threat-based associations between ACEs and child outcomes whereas high suppression amplified deprivation-based associations between ACEs and child outcomes. Findings are consistent with differential patterns of association between parental ACE dimensions, parenting-specific emotion regulation, and child psychopathology. Parenting-specific ER may represent a potentially modifiable parenting-related process and a potential target for future intervention research. Key Findings Deprivation-based childhood adversity in parents was linked to higher child psychopathology. Parenting-specific emotion regulation showed independent effects, with adaptive strategies relating to lower child psychopathology and suppression and rumination relating to higher child psychopathology. Suppression moderated these associations, suggesting that parenting-specific emotion regulation may be an important target for future intervention research. Differential Associations from Parental Childhood Adversity to Child Psychopathology: Evidence from Sexual and Gender Minority Families.
