This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.

Book of the year 3. Beautifully written combination of memoir, history, and nature, set where mountains, countries and lakes meet in Northern Greece. With bears and pelicans too. I had to take this opportunity to boost with the American edition on the way.

The Narta Lagoon on Albania‘s Vjosa River Delta, where I traveled last month for the NYT. The Narta is a vital stopover for 1,000s of migratory birds, yet an airport is being built there, a luxury resort is being planned there. Until recently, it was a protected area, prized for its biodiversity.

Bit behind on my Ythan Estuary blog but working to catch up. In meantime, here’s an encounter from last weekend when I went to the estuary early & noticed approx 30 House Martins gathering mud for their nests. The tide had dropped & still falling, exposing wet soil along edges of the Foveran Burn.
