This is how I know a fetus isn't a child.
I've known many people who have lost an embryo or a fetus, meaning the pregnancy was wanted and anticipated with joy. I have lost one myself. It's incredibly painful and often devastating in the aftermath.
But we (mostly) recover and move on.
