September's here & for many of you a new academic year. So just a brief reminder of what we're here for. The OBC is a charity that channels library funding to Diamond OA publishers - the books are free to read & no author pays to be published. It's small-scale, deliberately, but with a big impact!

Don’t Build Another Repository: Building Research Data Support Without Duplicating Infrastructure
When universities begin thinking seriously about open research data, one solution appears almost immediately: build a repository. It sounds logical. It sounds ambitious. It sounds like progress. But at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the Library asked a different question: what do researchers need first – another platform or a clearer path? Our answer was not to build new infrastructure. It was to build support. The Library launched a dedicated Open Research Data Section around real moments of need: preparing DMPs, understanding FAIR practice, deciding where data should go, and getting help early enough to matter. Instead of launching a standalone repository, we created a curated institutional pathway through RepOD. This allowed us to invest where local impact was greatest: developing librarians into data steward roles, guiding researchers through decisions, and cooperating with the University Project Department so that support begins at proposal stage, not at the end. This poster tells a simple story: transformation does not always begin with building something new. Sometimes it begins by choosing connection over duplication. Early results include increased dataset sharing and a stronger role for the Library as a research partner.

Saying that PRC will lead to greater inequities is like saying that all OA publishing relies on APCs. It's just not true, and it causes researchers to turn away from a beneficial publishing model as they seek to avoid a damaging business model. +

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

How is anyone going to do the work that leads up to those big grants? You need loads of small bits of financial support for most humanities research (or, well, job security and non-overload with teaching & admin but 🤷‍♀️) and to support the groundwork. Only massive grants skew the research environment.
