The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

EU drops sponsorship of disinformation conference at Trump officials’ request
Lithuania and Canada were also pressured to withdraw, and days before #Disinfo2026, logos were wiped off website The Trump administration pressured multiple countries to withdraw their sponsorship of a leading European conference on disinformation, with Canada, Lithuania and the EU’s diplomatic service subsequently agreeing to do so, the Guardian understands. How is it not news when the president nods off in public meetings and press conferences dozens of times? If you follow independent media, you see it and know about it. But why hasn’t CBS, NBC or ABC showed a montage of it on their evening news? They simply refuse to ever show it.

You can't get anyone in political media to say it plainly, but GOP strategy for several decades now has been built around the fact that its core goals/policies are *wildly unpopular*. Everything depends on a) polluting the information environment, b) cementing unfair structural advantages, & c) $$$.

When a president is saying, but not saying as an intimidation strategy.
Ad Baculum: Threats of force or intimidation. Used by dangerous demagogues to change the subject of debate and silence legitimate opposition. Paralipsis: I'm not saying, I'm just saying. Used by dangerous demagogues to avoid accountability by saying two things at once.

Congenital measles has rarely been seen in the U.S. That’s changing as vaccination declines and more pregnant women become infected.

The serious risk from AI shown by this incident is people—namely the US military—thinking the tech is more capable than it is and nearly acting based on bad info. It wasn’t insufficient reverence for the tech’s power. Not only are these opposite problems, believing the latter worsens the former.
