One of my good friends is unusually Irate at my non-interest (I found the first three hours of the audiobook really annoying) and keeps pitching more and more of the story to me. It’s… approximately the same experience as listening to the audiobook, so far

This month's @motherjones.com cover is astounding. Reposted with alt text:
Cover of the September-October issue of Mother Jones Magazine: a white background with the words "50 years of fearless journalism" in black print, centered above the name/logo of the magazine in large Bright Red. Below that in black, the words "the southern strategy — jim crow was dead and buried. Then came the Roberts court."

And then, framing those words, there are two sets of robes: to the left, the simple black robes of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government, as a Supreme Court Justice might wear; to the right, the white robes and hood of the KKK.

A white person's hand with cuff of business suit and shirt visible, reaches into the scene from the right, poised to grab the Klan robes.

What it really really means is that with the power of this Allen wrench and a flathead screwdriver, I can teach my baby to hover ominously *above* her crib as she grows from starfish to homunculus

According to ikea my baby is currently transforming from the goober on the left to the goober on the right It’s not *inaccurate* I suppose. Just a little haunted
Photo of an ikea flat pack furniture installation guide. On the left, a cartoon baby, complete with starfish-like arms and legs and one curl of hair hovers ominously over a crib with the mattress support installed about halfway down the crib wall. On the right, a larger cartoon baby with five curls of hair and somewhat defined stubby feet hovers over a crib with the mattress support installed down at the bottom of the crib walls. (This baby can ostensibly at this point try to climb out of the crib)

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.

Yeah there are a lot of circulars that crop up in a local craft reuse store near me, so I’ve been surfing different brands to figure out what I like! I do see why people love their chiaogoos

Because everyone explains it slightly differently, and one explanation or another finally stuck! But kudos for playing with it for four hours, that’s great persistence in the face of frustration. You’ll nail it soon I am confident Have you used DPNs before?

Can you say what wasn’t working about it? I think my major problems were getting tension right in between the two needles, and of course the original issue of just kinda wrapping my head around what’s happening. I found it helpful to watch a bunch of different YouTube videos of people doing it

Vicky Stein (agentredsquirrel) @vicky.science · 14/09/2026
These were knit on 40” size 0 needles, which are *not* the cheap interchangeables. Such a better knitting experience, woof! But I’m new enough at knitting I haven’t invested in needles I’ll regularly need — just secondhand stuff from the reuse store, and this one set of interchangeables, and those!

Vicky Stein (agentredsquirrel) @vicky.science · 14/09/2026
I think I tend to ladder a bit worse with magic loop but I’m using cheap interchangeable circulars for this sweater and they may not be quite long enough to do magic loop properly anyway, so it could be a tool problem rather than a technique problem, not sure

Vicky Stein (agentredsquirrel) @vicky.science · 14/09/2026
I was pulling from both outside and inside of each ball of yarn, which did not help The Tangles, of which there were many. I don’t mind DPNs like I thought I would, though. I’ve switched to using them for baby sweater sleeves despite instructions calling for magic loop

Vicky Stein (agentredsquirrel) @vicky.science · 14/09/2026
I did them two-at-a-time on a super long circular! I recommend this if you are, like me, very unlikely to do an identical second sock. I do not recommend this if you, like me, have accidentally wound your yarn into an unconscionable tangle while trying out a new ball winder

Vicky Stein (agentredsquirrel) @vicky.science · 14/09/2026
There was not *zero* swearing at the heels, but the top section actually gave me the most trouble — my tension was too tight and I had to redo about four inches of each sock 🤦🏻‍♀️

Always lay your baby down to sleep on their back in a product designed for safe sleep.
A baby sitting in a catapult in a suburban backyard. The baby seems surprised to be there. The text reads: Is this a safe sleep environment for your baby? No! This is a catapult! Put your baby to sleep flat on their back in a crib, bassinet, play yard, bedside sleeper or other product designed for safe sleep. If your baby falls asleep in a car seat or other product not designed for sleep, move them to a safe sleep space.

#Bird of the Day: American Bittern (AMBI) It’s a good day when I spot a bittern, as they are notorious for posing motionless among the brown reeds & grasses, throat stretched upward & its brown-striped neck pattern blending with the vertical growth of the vegetation. Some species are parthenogenetic?? Some are super asymmetrical in the junk department??? The moms pack their eggs with pre-digested dirt so the babies have immediate access to microbial symbionts that help them digest their foods (honestly so practical why don’t we do that)
