Every ball in the Statcast era that was (1) pulled (2) EV between 105 and 106 (3) LA between 48.5 and 49.5. The only one that would've cleared the LF fence in MIL (342 feet) was hit at Coors. In my opinion, pretty darn unlikely it would've been a dinger.

Seriously: Hate Digger all you want, but [pauses for flow of hate] movies like Digger are why we need studios. A world in which Digger doesn't get made one in which Sinners and One Battle also don't get made. You miss with Heaven's Gate and you still swung. You miss with Paw Patrol and you >

Anyway, a movie culture without the possibility of insane overpriced whiffs will be a less healthy movie culture, and I'll eat these words the day that I can say that David Ellison has taken at least three big creative gambles, but I'm not holding my breath. x

Nicole is a leading expert on the issue of campus sexual violence. I am floored that USA Today would do this to her. I find this kind of journalistic behavior unethical and morally reprehensible, twisting an interview with a renowned advocate for survivors into a hit piece against a survivor.

the NZ budget for the arts in 2026 is $460.7 million dollars. Now, I can't be absolutely sure re: Norway (bc I can't actually read Norwegian), but I found two sources that suggests it's on avg around US$1.2 billion per year. That's around NZ$2 billion. lol. lmao. sigh.

Vicci Ho @vicciho.com · 03/10/2026
Just thinking about all this as I watch NZFC getting gutted yesterday and all of us having to fight for scraps with CNZ for money that absolutely is not enough to ensure you can actually focus on your arts. I mean, making money from oil is not great, but at least they are spending it well.

I looked up how you can get just as a baseline - you can still get other grants, work, etc, make money from your work...but the baseline amount you can get is NZ$64000. If you write a book there are guaranteed purchase grants to ensure the govt will buy at least 1000 copies from your publisher.

Vicci Ho @vicciho.com · 03/10/2026
But what I was most interested in is the arts because it's my field. I almost choked when I saw that you can apply for a grant if you are an early artist to essentially be a basic income - for older, established artists, you can get a 10 year grant or until you turn 70, aka, until you retire.

On the train I sat next to a high school kid who told me because she has to finish her 12th Grade in Bergen which is hours away from her hometown, the government pays her money to help her get by. (school is free, obvs) I looked up the amount, it's NZ$ 1300 a month, not too shabby.

on the one hand, OMG, as a tourist, everything was so expensive. I almost cried when I paid $50 for a smoked salmon sandwich and a beer and every plain black brewed coffee is $10. lol. But being a Scandinavian country, Norway takes that oil money and spends it on the state.

Vicci Ho @vicciho.com · 03/10/2026
I was recently in Europe for vacation and made a stop in Norway - and because I am a dumbass, I had no idea until a month before my trip that it is one of the most expensive countries in the world because it's an oil state and has a 2 trillion dollar sovereign fund

I feel like the debate about what parts of AI are good and what parts are bad should wait until we solve the worldwide crisis caused by the fact that almost of all of its evangelists in both tech and govt are morally, intellectually, and ethically unequipped to oversee it, when not downright evil.

Genuine question for someone not fully understanding editorial decisions for RNZ? It is a govt-funded media company, right? a la ABC news of Australia? Why is it so focused on promoting RW talking points? It seems like it isn't a new phenomenon (post 2023 govt change)?

No.

You should see it immediately. Madame Web belongs in the Criterion Collection with a lengthy, labored essay justifying its inclusion. I would write it for free.
