When they finally made it to the city gates, a couple of guards jumped to block them before they even got close. “Who are you, and who’s that with you?” one of them shouted. “Holy shit, what did you do to - Wait, is he a half-elf? Oh, well then, he probably -”
Gallara looked both guards in the eye, and magic pulsed in her skull again as she leaned in. “Half-elves are just as deserving of respect as anyone,” she hurried, “and the vast majority are nice people. This one is an outlier, and that’s only because of extreme circumstances. Don’t you agree?” Part of her wondered if maybe she was trying too hard.
“Oh, yes, definitely,” the human guard said, and the elven one nodded as they both eased their posture. “My cousin dated one for a little while, and he was polite as you please.”
“Don’t forget it. Now can we pass?” She glanced back at Alakshi, who looked uncomfortable. Crap, she was trying too hard. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Chocolate crazy cake. The "crazy" comes from how simple the directions are. Just put all the ingredients in the same bowl and stir them up, then bake the batter.

Crazy Cake

3c flour
2c sugar
1/2 c cocoa
2 c water
2/3c oil (veg or canola oil)
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vanilla
2 Tbsp vinegar

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Bake at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes. Open the oven every 5-10 minutes to make sure the cake falls in on itself and gets gooey on the inside.

It doesn't even have to be stupid choices, now that I think about it. There are plenty of examples of characters whose only function is to *intentionally* annoy others, and that's hack writing, too.

One of the quickest ways for a story to lose me is when any of the characters consistently make stupid choices for no reason other than to annoy the other characters. It's a cheap, lazy sham of comedy that's turned me off from several otherwise-good series.

My heart started pounding as I tucked myself in, though; packing had made everything that much more real, and it was settling into my brain that this was the last time I would ever sleep in this bed with all of them. This big, warm, crowded, sometimes-peed-in bed, where we all shared whatever sicknesses someone had picked up first, and where we’d once woken up to find my little cousin Nemmy dead.
Yeah, I was making the right decision.

#LateNightWrite For no reason I've EVER understood, almost everything I wrote in high school was about two people meeting and becoming friends. Most of my long-form stories now involve themes of friendship and often loneliness, but in small groups instead of couples, and include other deep themes.

“How did you get so popular?” Zedenko yelled over the continual roar of the crowd. “Did you pass a law subsidizing beer?”
“I’m nice,” Hallimae shrugged. “Pop’s been kind of tough on them. I treat people like they’re my people instead of my servants, and they know I’m going to ease up some laws and stuff when I take the throne someday. Subsidizing beer is a good idea, though.”
That was great, but right now Gallara kind of wanted to just put a bag over Hallimae’s head so they could reach the palace before next sunrise.
They eventually ran into a set of guards, though, who brought them a carriage drawn by one of those fuzzy giant millipedes. Everyone but Alakshi seemed glad about that, and people didn’t block the road as much now that Hallimae could be hidden behind the carriage doors.

There’s a huge social media push to get people to stop voting. There’s a reason that right was so hard fought. It does matter, even when both candidates are less than ideal. Overwhelming at the polls shows the people are paying attention and slows the progress of corruption.
