Splendid day (and evening) out with the intrepid @wildjustice.bsky.social team in Poole Harbour. Lawyers and activists and ecologists letting their hair down after another year of taking ecological injustice to court. We saw avocets and egrets and spoonbills and a very inert white-tailed eagle.

Worst was missing out on an amazing day due to illness with Wild Justice on Sunday watching for WTE and Spoonbills, which I gather were seen... it looked amazing. I can report that though I complained I do have an emergency appointment this morning. It is just the system is hard to navigate

I think Andy Burnham needs to sort out the NHS GP system in this country before sorting out the Welfare system. It is appalling you have to use a triage form to try and get an emergency GP's appointment on the same day.

I weathered the stress by going out and helping someone in the village find their dog lost in the woods in the dark. I asked the other two women, both in late 60s or early 70s, whether they wanted a torch to see in the pitch black. They responded with a resounding no, because they knew the paths..:)

I really struggle with performing in interviews - where I just suffer blanks and very quickly lose my train of thought - and don't say all the things I should and need to say, almost like astral projecting. Is this an autistic thing? I prep & prep but makes no difference, I still come across badly.

The tremendous river Ribble greeted me in Settle with a roar. First bird I saw was a kingfisher - a dashing turquoise blue diamond. Then an egret. Had a great convo with some local people about it being a spate river. It's quite something as it crashes through Settle.

Not 30 bucks, a herd of 30 roe deer, also to be clear.
000
verityrhealey @verityrhealey.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
The person was polite, and had no problem answering questions or being challenged. They did call the deer vermin at first, but that could be because they don't expect the public to understand the need to cull them, so it is easier to say vermin, as it is less emotive?

verityrhealey @verityrhealey.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
It's legal to shoot bucks atm, and I had no reason to disbelieve that they did not have permission, as they were openly driving around near the landowner's house. Why am I saying this? Because it is good to check up on these things and people should check if they are concerned or suspicious.

To be clear, I caught up with the person at 6am this morning, and they were indeed shooting. After a bit of probing, they said they were shooting Roe Deer bucks. They said there was a herd of 30 eating the crops. I asked them if they a) had permission and b) had a licence, which they did.

There are many crises on our rivers, and one of them is that they might start to disappear for good. There are some in N Yorkshire that have suffered this fate, and I am concerned this might happen to the Seven in summer. It is a sobering thought because in Sinnington, it draws in so much wildlife.
