Pro tip for event organisers: don't say "book online" unless you mean there's an option to join the event online. Say "book tickets" or similar + your link. "Book online" got me up at 5am today for an event that is not actually hybrid. 🤦‍♂️

Our new piece out today in Times Higher Education about the threats to Geography in the UK - particularly fieldwork - please do share. It links to a recent snapshot survey on the challenges being faced in UK HE, which highlights the inequities of the challenges, but also fears of what is yet to come

Well over a century of people being annoyed about this. (Seriously, there's so many iterations I have to check in web searches... it's a bit of a nightmare!)
Screenshot of a 1904 review of Eva Gore-Booth's play entitled Unseen Kings. Part of the text is highlighted. It says "...Cuculain, who, by the way, seems to spell his name differently every time he appears in the inadequate alphabetics of the Sassenach..."

While trying to find out more about Elsie Royya I came across this description of the most Ossianic-sounding performance I've come across in awhile... there are so many reasons this is funny. Step aside, Darthula, Fiona's got a haunted claymore and she's not afraid to use it (alt text more legible)
"SCOTTISH BALLET: NEW EDINBURGH PRODUCTIONS." The Scotsman (1921-2002), 13 May, 1931, p. 10.

The large and varied programme presented last night in the Music Hall by the members of the Scottish Ballet indicated a serious purpose and a great amount of study and rehearsal in this specialised and picturesque form of expression. The entertainment, which reached a high level of attractiveness, included a rendering of two symbolic pieces and a large variety of shorter concerted or individual items, in which dancing movements and technique were predominant. "Glamourie," a romance of Culloden Moor by Elsie Royya, the producer, to music by Mr W. B. Moonie, has an alluring mystical atmosphere, which last night was successfully sustained by the large numbers of dancers who took part in the ballet. It is the story of a Highland maiden venturing on Hallowe'en on the haunted moor of Culloden in the hope of getting in touch with her slain lover, and the development of the ballet in a symbolic way pictures her mental experiences as she is terrified by the shadows and vague influence which surround her on the moor. There is a dramatic intrusion of the drums on a phantom army, with the beckoning of a claymore; and as the shadows and spirits that haunt the moor pass away Fiona remains, her warrior's claymore mysteriously in her hands. The story weas appreciatively worked out in the ballet scheme which included in addition to graceful rhythmic movements, an engaging display of colour and lighting. Miss Royya brought a large amount of dramatic power to bear on the part of Fiona, and the numerous company who represented the moor-land mists and the spirits of the glens, the lively heather sprites, and other elements in the composition, acted well with her.

I came across reference to a ballet by Elsie Royya/Elsie Grey MacFarlane in The Scotsman (1930) which features 'Cuthullin', Fand, and Midir, so presumably adapting Serglige Con Culaind but with Midir instead of Manannán for some reason? But I'm having a hard time finding more. Anyone know anything?

So I've been on a long social media detox and I don't think I'm really coming back... (I have been using my pod bsky account a bit) but I do think I'll start dumping some of the wild things I find while doing my research here. For myself to look back at later, if nothing else.

Alicia Spencer-Hall @aspencerhall.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
So I wrote a book about Twitter. Medieval Twitter to be exact---the interconnections between Twitter's textual modes & medieval literary culture(s), plus medievalists' use of Twitter and the #MedievalTwitter hashtag www.arc-humanities.org/978194240195... @archumanities.bsky.social #MedievalSky 🗃️
Front cover of "Medieval Twitter" by Alicia Spencer-Hall, published by Arc Humanities Press in October 2024. Series: Arc Impact. On a bright, textured blue background, neon pink birds from medieval manuscripts circle three medieval monks. The monk on the left reacts with a heart, the middle monk, agog, retweets, and the monk on the right wags his finger, tweeting a response. This pioneering monograph provocatively explodes current research paradigms for the modern and the medieval by showing that Twitter shares key similarities with medieval literary forms, texts, and narrative techniques. Analyzing tweets with medieval texts, and vice versa, Spencer-Hall initiates readers into an innovative methodology of interdisciplinary literary criticism, posing vital questions about the politics of medievalism today. Chapters include brand-new readings of The Owl and the Nightingale, the Chastelaine de Vergi, and Marie de France’s Laüstic, and arresting insights into troubadour style, Margery Kempe, and #MedievalTwitter. The book culminates in a medieval(ist) reading of Twitter’s premature demise, and Elon Musk’s medievalism. Throughout, points of contact and divergence are dissected, re-contextualizing the socio-cultural meaning of communication and texts across the temporal divide.

These are the most recent words from Abod in north Gaza tonight
Tweet in Arabic from Abod in north GazaTranslation:
I am from North Gaza, I address you from under the pressure of death,
Where you see the image of destruction through the eyes of the oppressed.
I miss the stillness that I only see through writing and putting vowels on words
The flames of the sky cut through the darkness, covering the horizon orange as if it were daylight, and the head was swept away by the sound of explosions until it almost exploded.
My heart is beating as if it is climbing up my throat, and my breath is so tight that I can hardly breathe: "And the hearts have reached the throats."
The streets are crowded with women and children, rushing in every direction, not knowing where fate will take them, as if we are on the verge of the Day of Judgment, where there is no refuge or escape.
