Some Hemiptera from Jersey. All those shown were quite common in the east, where I was based. All the Southern Green Shieldbugs I saw were nymphs.

A couple of impressive non-insects from my recent trip to Jersey: the tube-web spider, Segestria florentina and a House Centipede, Scutigera coleoptrata. Both quote common. First time I have seen either. Both stopped me in my tracks!

Some cockroaches seen in Jersey last week: female Tawny Cockroach with ootheca; female and male Variable Cockroaches. These last are now rather common, their rate of spread across Europe in recent times is incredible.
Tawny Cockroach, Ectobius pallidus, female carrying ootheca.Female Variable Cockroach, Planuncus tingitanus (potentially an aggregate of three species which may end up being anywhere between one & three when the taxonomists have made their minds up!). Note the length of the wings and the pale bar between the eyes.Male Variable Cockroach, Planuncus tingitanus. Wings longer than female but still a bit shorter than a typical Tawny, plus lacking the overall spottiness of Tawny & again with a pale bar between the eyes.

Turning the garden compost today, & thought I'd have a quick sift, just in case. And (*does air punch*) got my first garden record for Lesser Earwig, in the shape of this apparently one-winged female. #KentNature #earwigs #dermaptera
A small, brown earwig with pale legs. Part of its one wing projects beyond its short, squared-off elytra. Its short, stubby forceps indicates that it is a female.

Two Jersey Grasshoppers, Euchorthippus elegantulus, both gravid females, seen at Les Blanches Banques, Jersey last week. In the wider UK this species is only found in Jersey, though it is widespread in France etc. Quite like a Lesser Marsh Grasshopper, but that species is not found in Jersey.

The most abundant grasshopper species at Les Blanches Banques in Jersey is Heath Grasshopper (Chorthippus vagans), a species which in Britain is more or less confined to the New Forest area. Aside from the usually quoted ID features those b&w markings on the femur are quite distinctive.
