Large Marsh Grasshoppers on a Cambridgeshire fen and a Norfolk bog today. Plus their sworn enemy! Before the “Hop of Hope” project, led by Citizen Zoo, LMG were last seen in East Anglia in 1968. So nice to have them back! @norfolknats.bsky.social @naturalengland.bsky.social @wildlifetrustbcn.org

The companies fishing for Antarctic krill have harvested so much so quickly that the season had to close in August 2026, three months before it was scheduled to end. That's the second consecutive year...

A busy Sunday for the Hop of Hope Project, releasing home-reared Large Marsh Grasshoppers in the Norfolk Broads + Cambs Fens. Kudos to our volunteers, who have worked hard for 10 rainless weeks to find fresh grass daily for their ‘hoppers. + A sighting of Juniper in the Fens! @citizenzoo.bsky.social

Apparently, this “monster” touched my daughter’s bum when she sat down on the toilet in her holiday cabin and scared her! A marvellous Cliften Nonpareil (it’s the big one with the blue/grey band on its hindwings).

☀️Spent last weekend in the New Forest, surveying Large Marsh Grasshoppers (LMG) with @citizenzoo.bsky.social We always enjoy camping under the big oaks at Hollands Wood, with Wood Crickets chirping nearby. Sworn enemy of grasshoppers, this Wasp Spider recently bagged a LMG.😬 Otherwise, v enjoyable!

Last Thurs, I got back to nature by sleeping out in it! In a quiet corner of Norfolk, I spent the night in a paddock, by a pond, beneath trees. No traffic, the silence amplified the sounds of nature, with Tawny Owls hooting, a few deer barking. Above, the silent stars followed their lonely paths. ❤️

Insects are often overlooked, yet they play vital roles in nature. Some, like bees and butterflies, help plants reproduce through pollination. One of the easiest ways to help? Put the mower away. Let lawns bloom and give pollinators food, shelter and space to thrive. 🌼🐝 #InsectWeek #LetItBloom
Peacock butterfly resting on small pale flowers, showing bright red wings marked with bold eye-like spots in blue, black, and cream, against a soft green background.Likely a European paper wasp feeding on white blossom, with a slender yellow-and-black striped body, long legs, and folded wings, set against a soft, neutral background.Hummingbird hawk-moth hovering beside purple Common Knapweed flowers, using its long proboscis to feed on nectar, with rapidly beating wings blurred against a soft green background.

I had always thought the church at Helhoughton was unremarkable, until yesterday, when we observed approx 16 swifts hurtling around it squealing loudly. Devil birds definitely nesting there! House martins here favour the eaves of the old school/village hall, swallows nesting in people’s wood sheds.

Abundant butterflies in Helhoughton, Norfolk, today. It’s a great year for Painted Ladies, here seen on Purple Pimpernel. Male Speckled Woods were guarding their sunny patch territories against rival males, in airborne duels. Good numbers of Small Tortoiseshells seen and a solitary Green Hairstreak.

Birdwatching bonanza at Bempton Cliffs, E Yorks, on Monday. In a strong, gusty wind, birds were whizzing around all over the place. But nearing their nests they would sometimes face into the wind and hang there, then slowly reverse in and land! 📷H Green
