There's a lot of interesting bits about what happened, too. It's wildly unclear if he did what he was accused of, and he maintained his innocence but killed himself specifically so that his family wouldn't become destitute due to intricacies of his pension. \

I think there's also a third aspect of what they're doing, where they're using the shock value of the comparison to make people accept the (insane) sentience argument as a sort of fait accompli. That is, if we're talking about if they're slaves, they already have to be a thing that can be enslaved.
