A massive update: At least ~15 companies~ are selling scientists antibodies using faked validation data. We've documented 18,000+ manipulated images on 17,000+ products sold by leading laboratory suppliers including Thermo Fisher, Abcam, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Millipore Sigma and Bio-Techne. 1/🧵

I am sending an open letter to Thermo Fisher. Their response to my response to their manipulated western blot is bullying and petty. Yes, this western blot really is manipulated, it is unfair on me to say otherwise. I don't make those accusations lightly, and I have a (minor) reputation to defend.

Surprised to discover that Thermo Fisher appears to show a fake western blot for the validation of one of their p53 antibodies. I've added a diagram to show the very similar bands. This does not appear to be one of the "published figures" but their own internal data.

A friend was offered a fantastic, five-year postdoc position at a Germany university. When the university's HR found out she is undergoing cancer treatment (with very good chances of complete recovery), they forced the PI to withdraw the offer. These stories are not uncommon from Germany. Why?

www.americanscientist.org/article/%E2%... in my view the problem started when we forced basic science to be translational. this distorted it's nature and created false expectations, which in turn eroded the trust on basic science.

Our newest paper on mitochondrial Topoisomerase 1 shows that Top1mt has only weak endoribonuclease activity and it therefore does not often generate deletions at incorporated ribonucleotides. This helps explain why ribonucleotides are tolerated in mtDNA. Read more: academic.oup.com/nar/article-...
