In Vienna, they broadcast all performances into the square for anyone to watch. I was amazed at how generous and then saddened that "generous" was the word that came to me. The arts are for all. From penny-groundlings to the Opera boxes.

A digital illustration based on a scene from the German Expressionist silent film Metropolis (1927). What we see is a robot woman seated in a chair, colored in gradated maroon shades. She's a shiny brass color in a sculptural art deco style staring implacably or incomprehendingly outward. Two sockets on either side of her head and many such other sockets on the chair have wires leading away out of frame. The background, colored in shades of blue is divided into radial sections with lightning bolt edges. (All these colors are purely notional as the source material is all black and white.)Around the chair and the robot are four sets of equally-spaced concentric triple rings or some sort of energy or electricity. Riding the top edges of these rings is jaggedy, electric lettering reading 'Maybe it will happen today'.

A digital illustration of an attempt to make a fake illuminated manuscript. There’s a fancy illuminated drop capital M. Lots of medieval-type ornamentation, a little illustration in the corner of a rabbit with a battle ax having some sort of confrontation with a little bipedal lizard thing that has an arm instead of a neck and head which is holding a dagger. There’s an orange dragonish beast wrapped around the top of everything and lettering done in some kind of fanciful script reading ‘Maybe it will happen today’

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

🚀Aerospace engineer Dr. Mary Baker died #OTD in 2021. If you've ever marveled at photos from Mars, you're looking at her legacy. A master of structural dynamics, she directly influenced the design & testing of NASA’s Curiosity & Perseverance Mars rovers & the Internat'l Space Station. #WomenInSTEM
A professional studio headshot of aerospace engineer Dr. Mary Baker (1944–2021), captured from the chest up against a soft, out-of-focus background. She is smiling warmly, with an approachable and confident expression. Her chin-length blonde hair is neatly styled with a soft side part, framing her face. She is wearing a structured, dark blue button-down shirt with a crisp collar and a single visible dark button near the bottom of the frame. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting her blue eyes and friendly demeanor. The overall composition is a centered, clean portrait that evokes an encouraging, intellectual, and professional mood, honoring her historical significance as a visionary leader in structural dynamics who helped shape the design of the International Space Station and NASA's Mars rovers.

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO

Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957 a decade before physicians in England could legally perform an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year-old American on her way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, “You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life.”

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death:

I’ve done the best I could with my life.

This book is for you.

A digital illustration based on a photo of Tim Curry having a break between scenes filming the 90s TV version of IT. He’s standing in a wet, grassy field with a big blue blanket pulled around his shoulders. His right hand Is stuck out from the blanket holding an umbrella over his head. And his face is done up in full Pennywise evil clown makeup: white base, wide red mouth, bulbous red nose, blue eye coloring, curly drawn on brows, and a big frizzy red wig with a receding hairline. He’s also smoking a cigarette and looking introspective or else very bored. To his right is a lot of big smushed together pink lettering reading ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

A digital illustration of a feathered serpent. It is coiling back on itself several times across the frame until you get to the head on the right which looks something like a really mean bird of prey with a jagged beak and sticking out a long three-pronged tongue. It has a large mane of feathers that blends into the feathers that are covering the rest of its body and everything is colored in basically a rainbow gradient. There is one raptor-y claw and talons on the body just below the head and attached to the top curve of the coil behind the head is one wing. Again all colorful like. A pink and purple banner is sort of threaded through the coils toad the back and on it is lettering that reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

Why bang on about re-enchantment? #ReEnchantmentIsResistance
Re-enchantment as an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment as an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope.

Re-enchantment as personal metamorphosis. The space in which we grow glowing red eyes to patrol our communities against this long night of authoritarian pisspuffiny. The space in which we develop iron-hard fur that make us immune to the curses reductionist racists, misogynists, homophobes and AI cultists throw at us. Re-enchantment as the permissive circle where we can voyage into ourselves and find the marvels and bravery we need to deal with this age of violent bruising.

Re-enchantment as resistance.

French botanist Jeanne Baret was the first-known woman to circumnavigate the globe. + Disguised as a male assistant named "Jean" to bypass naval law + Faced extreme physical labor & safety threats for 2 years at sea + Completed loop around the Earth, returning to France in 1775 #WomenInSTEM (1/2)🧵
A colored historical illustration depicts French botanist Jeanne Baret (1740–1807), the first-known woman to circumnavigate the globe, disguised in the masculine attire she wore during Louis-Antoine de Bougainville’s expedition. Positioned centrally in a full-length, vertical composition against a sparse, open landscape under a muted sky, she looks off to the left with a subtle, resolute expression. She is dressed in a short blue jacket over a striped cream-and-yellow shirt and loose, matching striped trousers, bound at the waist by a wide brown sash. A vibrant red Phrygian-style cap tightly covers her hair. In her right hand, she securely cradles a bundle of harvested field grass and wild plants, while her left arm extends slightly outward to balance her casual stance. The overall composition blends a calm, historical mood with scientific purpose, visually documenting the courageous defiance of naval laws that allowed her to collect thousands of uncharted global plant specimens.
