No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Alan Turing’s gay short story reveals ‘fun, cheeky’ man
A racy short story by the ‘father of modern computing’ rips up Alan Turing’s ‘isolated mathematician’ image, revealing a playful man overcoming trauma and defiantly embracing his homosexuality.

Which, yes-- fast food workers vs doctors or engineers are different skillsets. I would not say that guilty pleasure authors and literary genius authors are equal. But. It's a slippery slope to start judging those guilty pleasure authors too harshly.

Neil S. @usoki.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
You don't have time to fully develop a deep and meaningful protagonist in a ten page bodice ripper-- and it would make the work worse. Disrepecting authors of guilty pleasures feels like saying fast food workers don't deserve living wages. If you consume and value that work, why penalize them?

I think this is where you have to be careful about separating the skill showcased vs the skill potential. Here I would point to Chuck Tingle- of course his horror novels will have better characters than the ones found in the erotica stories. But it's the same man writing both.

Neil S. @usoki.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
People who loudly exclaim "AI art is not REAL art" but refuse to speak out against AI erotica are admitting they don't respect or value the work that goes into erotica. Whether it's ignorance or it's moral disgust, it's not a good look either way.

Neil S. @usoki.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Honestly, I think it comes back to your earlier point about how some people respect the entire process, while some people only care about the output. If you only value erotica for the 'output' it gives you, then it becomes easy to justify cutting all of those corners.

It was William Carlos Williams for me, but-- yes, absolutely. Logically, I understand there is a beauty and an elegance to the way a small handful of words can evoke such imagery which is deceptively hard to achieve. Emotionally, he can take his stolen plums and his wet wheelbarrows and shove it.

It gives me "Renaissance Monk" mixed with "someone dared Marilyn Monroe to wear a potato sack" vibes. Any monk with vows of modesty, poverty, servitude, etc. would not look anywhere near as stylish as the Jedi do in their robes.

I'd be tempted, but it would be bad and I probably wouldn't press it. If that someone apologized or otherwise repented prior to their death, the button remains pressed. And people change over years or decades, you know?

I am reminded of the time someone pro-life attempted to argue that, in order to truly calculate "number of people killed via abortion," you must also estimate how many of those people would have grown up and had abortions of their own. Which they called Ghost Abortions.

I would also point out that this scenario assumes the grocery stores are not incentivized to prioritize brands for shelf space even if they sell slower, which feels... optimistic at best, as someone who is admittedly uninformed but very skeptical about the fairness of this part of Capitalism.

This feels like a low-stakes variant of the Prisoner's Dilemma. If both buy the generic, prices go down. If either buy the name brand, prices stay the same and now one person has worse chips. Not all generics are equal, and I will die on that trivial hill. Generic Oreo/Hydrox are GROSS.

I still remember someone telling me that North is cold and South is hot. I pulled up a map of the world, and silently pointed to Antarctica. But she doubled down-- North is cold and South is hot. We were in 5th Grade at the time, which is... slightly better than coming from a grown woman? Maybe?

But that's getting away from the original premise. Can I, in principle, actually object to the absorbtion of the work? No. The objection is in the lack of safeguards between input and output to ensure that the output is a unique product.

Neil S. @usoki.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Like-- I see a lot of people using AI to make artwork of their D&D characters. Personally, I'm not a fan, but... if they were never going to pay an artist, who exactly lost out on profit, here? If it wasn't AI artwork, it would be a movie screenshot or a webpage right-click instead.

We understand that when a person traces a painting, it is not a new drawing to be sold. We understand that when someone writes fanfiction without changing the source material, ot is not a new book to be sold. But somehow the AI output is treated as completely new.
110
Neil S. @usoki.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
I have to admit, based on this-- I don't object in principle. You could argue that a human making art *also* observes copyrighted things and makes tweaks or adjustments as they consume more art. The bigger issue is when people take the AI art and try to sell it as a meaningful and distinct product.

Rank and file Republicans are turning against LGBT acceptance and GOP politicians are leaning into bigotry in both rhetoric and policy. But it is you, the progressive queer or ally, who needs to open your mind and consider other people's feelings. news.gallup.com/poll/710810/...
Most of the recent changes in LGBTQ+ attitudes have occurred among Republicans. For example, in 2021 and 2022, 55% of Republicans said they favored legal same-sex marriage, but today, the figure is 37%. Among independents, support has dropped six points, to 67%, while Democrats’ views are the same as in 2022 (87% in favor).

An illustration of a very silly, stylized white cat giving a disproportionately large & more realistic thumbs up. They have a goofy, huge open mouth smile and big blush. Over them it says “did the thing*” and below them it says, in smaller type, “*that was on my to-do list for 6 months and took about 5 minutes to actually do.” The illustration is off a bright yellow background.

The red button reminds me of one of my favorite 500-level professors whose field of study was Pointless Geometry. As in, if you do not assume the definition of a Point to be true, how do you prove other basic concepts and does this approach have other applications to geometry, but also... pointless.

It's not something I would have noticed on my own, but I cannot deny that you have a point, huh. I'd assume it's a casualty of the decision to tell the story in a fully linear progression from near-start to death. Real Life seldom wraps up relevant themes neatly or cleanly.
