The one thing that shook me when I landed in Palo Alto years ago was the free-form psychopathology that pervaded every meeting, every dev sprint, every encounter as startup CEOs exploited neurodivergent devs. All that money/power yet nobody ever thought to say: don’t build that, go get therapy.

the amount of resources this app puts into obviously bad ideas must be wild. photo carousel? coded, shipped, gone days later because it was obviously awful. same with these account level labels. give us group DMs, a timed mute, and private accounts, and stop shipping garbage.

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

It's a gird of 4 x 5 bat profiles, seen from neck to head. There's so much diversity in what each one looks like: giant ears of unusual shape, leaf-nosed bats with extra bits, bats with their whole face shaped like an earlobe, flying foxes with puppy faces, and one very fine blep.

I have threads on like 20% of these, for the record.

Seeing a lot of “we went to the moon instead of funding healthcare” takes and want to note it is a false dichotomy. The US could easily do both, but the politicians and people who finance them have chosen to make Americans suffer. And they avoid paying taxes to make it harder to help Americans.

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents. Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.
