today's hardware designers could never conceive of what Kazuo Kawasaki was doing in 1996

A colorful retro computer setup featuring a purple keyboard, a small teal touchpad, and a teal circular CD-ROM drive with a matching keypad-style controller resting on top. The hardware is arranged against a dark background in a vivid purple-and-turquoise color scheme.

Let’s be real they’re using “furry” as a visibly queer subculture as a stand-in for queerness at large. Their goal has been to remove queer people from public life, and they’re testing different vectors to do so. Hence the all caps “MENTALLY ILL,” which is how they want to reclassify all queers

Robo Machines Scooter! The only 93 rerelease that has the Gobots name, probably down to the genericness of it rather than nostalgia. Scooter himself is far from generic though & is a lovely lil toy with great articulation (even better if you slightly mistransform him to have hips) #vintagetoytuesday

Robo Machines Scooter on an Italian card (sold in the UK for £1.25)

Scooter in robot mode. The RM 93 release has a very slightly different tummy sticker (looks like it was slightly redrawn) but is otherwise identical to the 80s release

Scooter mode! Again, really nice. Thankfully it doesn’t have the robot face on the front like the cartoon but you can see how they came to that design decision

Scooter goes to bed. The bed is actually Road Ranger’s truck bed but it still looks comfy (this pic demonstrates the extra hip articulation you get if you don’t collapse his legs in robot mode

Target Ninjas are here to blend in with nothing but the love in your heart. The love you reserve for ninjas, only.

T’Jbang and Scarlett are almost convincingly in the woods! Ignore the stand! That’s a warning. They have BLADES.

It’s those ninjas again. Don’t be fooled by the masks. She looks weird in that pose but I am tired and my space is limited.

every discussion of comic book adaptations needs to start from the baseline assumption that comics are the superior medium. something will always be lost in translation. if you can't be humble enough to admit this, you'll be chasing shadows in the labyrinth for the rest of your natural life.

Dug up from digital archives: a cute bit of mid-90s CG rendering of an MSX from an old '95 PCMania CDROM.

A 3D render of an MSX microcomputer on a wooden desk in a corner in front of a CRT TV with tapes, cart, and various games on the shelf. A 3 button arcade joystick can be seen next to an Asterix and Obelix poster on the wall.

Genuinely, this completely rules

－Recently, the game has been going viral on X for its beautiful undressing animations. I’ve even read in one of your previous interviews that the development team practiced stripping themselves as reference for the undressing animations. What was the process behind making the animations actually like?

Matsui:

I’d love to know how far that story has spread. It’s true.

First, we write a plot for each undressing scene, then draw storyboards, exactly as the original team did. Then the real work begins, because the animation is essentially all keyed by hand. A designer moves the clothing’s 3D model, frame by frame, manually. It really is pretty much like the claymation method I mentioned.

We did try automating it with physics simulation first, but it was a total failure. The cloth moved in a physically correct way, but had absolutely no allure. We learned a profound lesson: accuracy and sensuality are two unrelated properties. In the end, we accepted that humans would have to do all of it.

Then VR adds its own weight. In a normal game, if something becomes awkward, you can cut away or swap models between scenes. In VR, the player can look from any angle at any time, so none of those tricks are available. The same model has to undress convincingly no matter where you’re standing. When I described this to a designer at another studio, he said, “I would never do that.” I’ve chosen to take it as a compliment.

And then, yes, the part you’ve read about. The undressing motions themselves use motion capture, but the deeper problem was that nobody actually knew the correct rhythm and order in which a person takes off clothes. So, the directors gathered and undressed themselves as reference. “That zipper is coming down too fast.” “She’d pause once before slipping her shoulder out.” These were serious, sober discussions. For compliance reasons, the Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns team works in a walled-off section of our office – and that was the moment those walls truly earned their keep.
