Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 20/05/2026I was sampling an OR mudflat at low tide a few years ago and I was genuinely scared I would get stuck. That stuff is super hard to get free from. That's me in the image. 120
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 16/05/2026Come See our Grad Student @astrobio-agb.bsky.social this week at #AbSciCon2026. She'll be presenting her research on how desert microbes can literally drink water vapor from the air! 🌵💧 #Microbiology #Extremophiles #Desiccation #Astrobiology 1113
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 11/05/2026Our updated preprint is live. Anergiobiosis: a testable framework for microbial life under extreme energy flux limitation with @environmicrobio.bsky.social and @jenbiddle.bsky.social ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v... 1113
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 23/02/2026Since everyone is posting pics of their weather... (not actually taken today, but it's comparable) 120
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 23/02/2026ICYMI, our work building on the recent "aeonophily" proposal. We define anergiobiosis (an-er-jee-oh-biosis) as "life without energy" to describe life persisting on maintenance energy inputs alone. So-called "aeonophiles" may be specialists under this umbrella. Feedback welcome! 042
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 22/02/2026So chilly these last few days. Here in the 'dirty T' summer is the best 9 months of the year! We have summer (apparently now in Feb), super summer, and super-dee duper summer. 010

Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 16/12/2025One of my favorite places. This is me sleeping in one of the FHL labs ~20 years ago. Now, if only they needed a microbiologist... 040
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 02/12/2025My most-used bluesky words in 2025 were: 1. "congrats" (25×) 2. "research" (17×) 3. "paper" (15×) 4. "soil" (13×) 5. "those" (13×) Pretty fun app that compiles your usage into a report here: anisota.net/harvest 051
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 30/10/2025ICYMI: Our latest shows what happens to transcriptional and metabolic profiles in a desiccated soil bacterium. To simplify things, I've attached a visual abstract. Comments on the preprint are welcome! #microsky #microbesky www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 3234

Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 22/12/2024The electrolysis was a bit slow because of the overcurrent setting on gel power supply. Here’s the finished, seasoned pan. I forgot a before pic, but none of the wording on the bottom was legible because of more than a decade of use. #Griswold for the win! Now on to all my other pans. 192

Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 19/12/2024I met @kiricarini.com 17 years ago today! We’re celebrating both sick at home together while we figure out who is running which kid where and what we’ll feed them. Christmas was our 2nd date! Here’s how it went. 070
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 15/12/2024Cast iron electrolysis day with a surplussed gel power supply. Looks dangerous, and might be. 050

Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 06/12/2024In that eternal laboratory paradise, it shall count cells with unbridled joy, free from the earthly constraints of maintenance contracts and software updates. Each particle shall pass through its laser beams like a shooting star, perfect and pure. Losing old lab equipment to obsolescence is hard. 2101
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 06/12/2024Frustratingly still shorts weather here. Been a really warm intro to the “winter” season here in TUS. 020
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 04/12/2024When I do intervals, I do 6 sets of 4:00 on, 4:00 rest. Usually pulling around 220-250 watts across the workout (set 5 is my strongest). I’m doing a long row today at about 140 watts (~2:15). (13K today. My gym isn’t as nice as yours, but here’s my equivalent shot) 220
Paul Carini @uncultured.carinilab.com · 02/12/2024Electric guitars, flames and Christmas carols? Can only mean one thing: TSO! Turns out half our lab attended the Trans Siberian Orchestra show in Phoenix last night. But none of us knew we were there! 130
