We're also mere months after a Holyrood election at which we lost rafts of votes, and two government ministers, to the Greens. Short-sighted.
In the summer, the SNP lost a key parliamentary by-election in Aberdeen to the pro-drilling Conservative Party, where their North Sea messaging was a key focus. “It was bruising ,” the official quoted above said. “But we’d been shifting our position for a while.” Speaking in the debate at the party's conference Friday, the defeated SNP candidate in that by-election said the victorious Conservatives had hung the words ‘presumption against’ around “our necks lie an albatross.”

Also I’m not gonna let the linguistic point go: the BBC, the courts, and now the NHS all refer to trans people using slurs as a matter of official policy. That’s where Britain is at now.

the thing is, i could see this being a story if they framed it better? there is sometimes a supposition that young people failing to launch is about 'left behind towns' or poor transport links to employment etc but if it is evenly distributed between london and everywhere else, that is interesting!

Out for Indy's resolution calling for a comprehensive Scottish ban on conversion practices and condemning the half-baked, dangerous Westminster proposals will be debated on the first day of this week's SNP National Conference. We hope delegates will support us.

Thank you to @scotnational.bsky.social for publishing our column on why a Scottish conversion practices ban is necessary. Westminster spent 8 years promising a ban and then proudly presented a how-to guide instead. Scotland can and should do better. www.thenational.scot/politics/266...

@womenforindy.bsky.social have put out a statement on the absolutely abhorrent SPUC fringe at SNP conference glad to see pushback on this and hope more groups follow suit - we cannot let groups like SPUC erode our rights with wedge issues like this

Our Statement On The SNP Conference Anti-Abortion Fringe Group

Women for Independence are absolutely appalled to see the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, an anti-abortion group being platformed at the upcoming SNP conference.

Despite the event being presented as raising awareness on 'The reality of coerced abortion', this is merely a progressive veil for their outdated and bigoted beliefs.

The organisation is against the widespread use of contraception, morning after pills, abortion decriminalisation, most forms of sex education, and advocates for heavy restrictions to be placed on women's access to abortion.

We believe these measures, if implemented, would themselves amount to reproductive coercion of women to carry unwanted pregnancies.
Our Statement On The SNP Conference Anti-Abortion Fringe Group

The SPUC also has a deeply troubling record of homophobia, opposing same-sex marriage and encouraging parents to withdraw their children from sex and relationships education classes mentioning Igbtqia+ relationships.

We know these views don't align with the vast majority of party members, only two years ago party members passed a resolution to enshrine the right to abortion in the constitution of an independent Scotland.

We're shocked that in this day and age, a typically feminist party is actively choosing to platform this group. We're concerned about the message this sends to Scottish women - that our rights are up for debate and that the governing party supports that.

We call on the party to no longer permit this fringe group to go ahead - there is still time.

We highly encourage conference delegates to boycott this event, we need to send a clear message, that these kinds of extremist views are not welcome in the discourse on how to achieve an equal and independent Scotland.

I think there's also less motivation to! As a Canadian living in the UK I kinda keep forgetting Canada has the monarchy because it simply did not intrude on my life there the way it does here Banning Canadian citizens from holding titles and selecting out own governor general makes it invisible

We are committed to following the Morgan Rule. We will not attack the character of other trans people unless it is absolutely needed. The outside world does enough of that. No need for us to contribute to it

For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.

Labour Unions
