Well, you're not rolling dice, so it should be faster. You don't have to remember which NPC is affected. It has a very different feel than being able to lock down a single enemy with debuffs. I feel like it might work for a game that focuses on fighting hordes of the same kind of enemy.

So when someone "generates" an image using these systems, they are actually doing a kind of image search. "Generating" "art" this way is as much of an artistic endeavor as google searching images. And "AI-generated" images should be "AI-found" images. The same is true for music and video. 5/5

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
This would be like finding "x" when you are given an equation like "x^2 + x - 6 = 0". You are not generating "x". You're not creating new numbers. (Solutions are x=2 and x=-3 btw.) Likewise, a machine is not creating a new image, that "image" already existed (platonically speaking at least). 4/5

So "generative" image creation is more finding an image that matches a prompt in a mechanistic fashion starting from noise. The only thing that is being generated is the random noise. The image output is found accordingly. So, I think these images really are "found" not created. 3/5

To a computer, the input and output is just a number. It cannot see or comprehend an image or a prompt. And if you are inclined to believe that numbers exist as a Platonist does (which I do). Every digital image already exists (and can be found here: babelia.libraryofbabel.info, not AI btw) 2/5

"AI-generated images in place of art" is a great way to put it! I even want to push back on this idea that it is "generative". My understanding is that these models start with noise and then use vectors to mathematically arrive at an image output. 1/5

You can only upgrade to a d12 (there can only be 1 Mastermind on your crew!). WINNING: The first player to have 500 BUCKS wins. 9/9
000
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Upgrade: pay as many BUCKS as the next size die for a crew member and replace that die with the next size. If you have a crew member with a d4, pay 6 BUCKS to make them into a d6, pay 8 BUCKS to make them into a d8, and so on. 8/8

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
BUCKS: Spend BUCKS to reroll dice during jobs, recruit new crew members, pay bonds, or upgrade crew members. Reroll: pay 2 BUCKS and reroll a die during a job. Recruit: pay 4 BUCKS and get a new d4 crew member. 7/7

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
At the end of each round, you can choose to roll the die for any of your crew members in JAIL and if you roll their highest possible value, they escape. When this occurs, reduce that crew member's die size by one (to the lowest of a d4) as it's hard to do jobs when you're wanted by the law! 6/6

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
If a rolled die has a value of 1, that crew member was caught during the job and goes to JAIL. JAIL: While in JAIL, a crew member cannot go on jobs. You can pay a crew member's die size in BUCKS as a bond and get them out of JAIL. 5/5

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
roll the dice for the crew members you decided to participate and up the result for each group that is working together. If the result of a group exceeds the DV, the group takes home the DV amount in BUCKS. 4/4

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
You choose any members of your crew to go on any number of jobs. You can also partner up with any other player and split the result or go it alone. Once each player has decided what each of their crew members are doing and the split, 3/3

You start with 1 d20 and 4 d4s. The d20 represents your character, the Criminal Mastermind. The other dice represent the individuals in your crew. You also have 0 BUCKS. Each round, one player rolls 3 d20s to determine the difficulty value (DV) of available jobs. 2/2

Not a #TTRPG, but this could be a pretty fun dice game. Criminal Masterminds - A Dice Jail Game To play this game, you will need 1d20 per player and about 5 each of d4s, d6s, d8s, d10s, and d12s per player. 1/1

This is survivorship bias. Yes, a few will make it, but it's a vanishingly small few compared to the number who will fail. The best advice to those who need to earn a living is to look somewhere other than TTRPGs. But, if you do not need to earn a living, do it only because you love it!

And what a capstone for a multi year long campaign can the epic destinies be! Only issue is that it takes so long to get to that point, so it feels like a once-a-lifetime thing to have a group do it. A lot of great suggestions for other games that do something like that in the thread too.

I don't consider myself a rules lawyer, I'm a rules advocate.

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I feel like, while exploiting the rules can be fun, if you are always exploiting, you probably will end up being inconsistent somewhere in how a rule is applied. I think that's the crux of this issue (caring about consistency). Maybe that doesn't matter to you and your group, though!

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
100% agree about the mutual respect. If everyone's on the same page, no one should care outside the game what you're doing. How do you feel about interpreting the rules in the way you think is most correct? Sometimes this might be to your (or another player's) advantage and sometimes disadvantage.
130
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I know my groups will use it in that way a lot, but it is an ironic use of the term. Someone might say, "I'm gonna rules lawyer that..." but everyone at the table appreciates someone knowing a rule better and providing that info to the group.
020
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I think the negative terminology is not necessarily that they are trying to get advantage, but rather an adherence to the rules over the desires of other players. So, it might be the case that the GM and another player are on-board with a ruling that breaks the rules, the rule-lawyer may speak up.

Also as someone who doesn't really care for comics or manga. Junji Ito's stuff is fantastic. So +1 for that suggestion. Another excellent manga is Tsutomu Nihei's Blame!

I often wrestle if that is still true today... Would I reach more people if I just made the whole game free, or is a free and paid version best? Regardless, the most important point Matt makes is that there's no reason to argue about how anyone should be spending money (or not) on their hobbies! 3/3

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
The part Matt is talking about the hobby businesses and wanting to charge to "make it worth" the time put in creating, I think may be true for many, but for me, the main reason I've been charging is that I've read that some people look down on free/PWYW games and don't give them a chance. 2/3

I feel like I'm in this weird middle-ground between being a part of a "tradition" philosophy wherein I spend very little money on the hobby, yet spend hundreds of hours playing and running games and a hobby business where I make new games for others. 1/3

Do you think this is because Miyamoto's advice is wrong or is it a TTRPG-specific problem? I think maybe if you have a large following, you can probably do whatever you want and it'll do well. But for someone (and their group) to commit themselves to a game that is not famous seems rare.

Sure, BUT: The credit for the tinkering does not belong with the game. It belongs to those who do it. I believe many of the best game designers in the world are running bespoke systems based on D&D, which they call D&D, and which neither they nor their play groups credit them for creating.

Just your regular reminder that there are other #TTRPG alternatives to #D&D that aren't leaning on AI. You really like 5e, but don't want to support AI? Tales of the Valiant or Level Up 5e. Looking for an old school vibe without the headache of ThAC0? Basic Fantasy. Like crunch? Pathfinder. 1/3

Badly promote your TTRPG: You're a magical girl, but getting a bad grade in your science class might ruin your mood and make you worse off in a fight. Some bad guys also can hurt your feelings by telepathically saying mean things to you.

I think you've highlighted a good trade-off here. I think the solution for the trad game though is that you find an enemy similar enough to what you want and just reskin it. That still puts a larger burden on the GM than a rules-lite system, though.

For example, if the target is 14 and you roll a 12 or 13 and somehow scrape by, that feels cool. If the target is 12 and you roll a 12 or 13 and just scrape by, that doesn't feel cool. Both examples have the same tiers of success and outcomes for the roll, but they feel quite different! 3/3

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
And I realized that there is some kind of psychological impact of getting a partial success when you fail hitting a target by 1 or 2 vs just having a partial success at the target and 1 or 2 above. 2/3

Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
I was thinking about mechanics in "traditional" #TTRPGs that allow you to succeed when it would have been a failure (like D&D's "Succeed at a Cost") and tiered successes such as partial success, full success, and critical success. 1/3

I am tired of reading RPG pantheons that are Hellenic reskins. I am tired of reading "And then, MY sun god, Daylor, is good and he hates the undead, but--get this--there's also a god of orcs and he's bad." Please give me weird, contradictory, and confusing fantasy divinities.

I've been under the impression that crunch is rules/mechanics and is contrasted with fluff which is "flavor text". A game with more crunch has more rules, and usually is more stimulationist and/or focused on combat/skirmishes. Some people like crunch and some don't, but it's not a bad thing, right?
110
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
But they can also just trust the players to solve those problems when they reach those points. And for some players, the solution may be free form role playing.
030
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Because the way I see things is that every system has a point where its mechanics will not be able to simulate what the players are wanting to do (if not outright failure, it at least may be awkward). I think designers should highlight these boundaries and offer advice on how to proceed.
131
Ultimate Hyper Games @ultimatehypergames.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
The only counterpoint I have is that a game like CAIN knows what it’s good at and it sticks to it. That is its design goal. Does it really need to simulate everything outside of that experience, or can it allow players to figure it out on their own?
