Traveller also allows has options to make it less binary! This is from the Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 page 61. They're very similar to what appears in D&D.
A table from Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 that shows the effect results table.

Pertinent to this discussion is the "Marginal Failure" where a Traveller has failed by 1 and may be permitted a success instead but with some cost.

I think it feels wrong too, but... D&D (5e) has "Success at a Cost" and "Degrees of Failure" to address this issue. I've used similar rulings to this for as long as I've been running games, so I'm not sure this is the actual first time it appeared. No reason not to use it in any game.
A screenshot from the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide.

Success at a Cost

Failure can be tough, but the agony is compounded when a character fails by the barest margin. When a character fails a roll by only 1 or 2. you can allow the character to succeed at the cost of a complication or hindrance. Such complications can run along any of the following lines:

• A character manages to get her sword past a hobgoblin's defenses and turn a near miss into a hit. but the hobgoblin twists its shield and disarms her.

* A character narrowly escapes the full brunt of a flreball but ends up prone,

• A character fails to intimidate a kobold prisoner, but the kobold reveals its secrets anyway white shrieking at the top of its lungs, alerting other nearby monsters.

* A character manages to finish an arduous climb to the top of a cliff despite slipping, only to realize that the rope on which his companions dangle below him is close to breaking.

When you introduce costs such as these, try to make them obstacles and setbacks that change the nature of the adventuring situation. In exchange for success, players must consider new ways of facing the challenge. You can also use this technique when a character succeeds on a roll by hitting the DC exactly, complicating marginal success in interesting ways.

Degrees of Failure

Sometimes a failed ability check has different consequences depending on the degree of failure. For example, a character who fails to disarm a trapped chest might accidentally spring the trap if the check fails by 5 or more, whereas a lesser failure means that the trap wasn't triggered during the botched disarm attempt. Consider adding similar distinctions to other checks. Perhaps a failed Charisma (Persuasion) check means a queen won't help, whereas a failure of 5 or more means she throws you ip the dungeon for your impudence.

Still hacking away at a #Yakuza / Like a Dragon inspired #TTRPG. But, I have a title and a logo (made in #Inkscape) for it that I really like and wanted to share. "Criminals with Hearts of Gold" A role playing game about doing the right things in the wrong ways.

I've been feeling some imposter syndrome lately. I'm not much of an artist. I think I'm a competent writer. But there's just so many amazing people making stuff out there! So, I went back to one of my old games, and although it has many flaws, it's still really fun! Here's a highlight
A snippet from the "Company Catalogue" from "Loot & Scoot Inc."

Thought about it more and I think, generally for my games, they are some combination of these. My "icebergs" are deep and broad, but there may be parts that are "hollow" or not filled in yet or disconnected, or seem to be disconnected.

There's also a few good suggestions here: www.reddit.com/r/callofcthu... This Redditor's take is also my general understanding of what CoC is like in Japan and why I think you might be drawn to the Japanese TRPG scene too! haha

It's not cult related - it's a nerd thing. I haven't had a chance to complete a game of this yet, but just reading this #soloTTRPG has me inspired (which is really unusual, they're not typically my thing). It's really cool.

Also, as you get out further, the zone area gets larger, so you may want to divide them up more than just by orbitals. You could have multiple rings with a number of zones in that ring equal to a certain sized die. Innermost-ring is a 4 = d4 Next d6 d8 d10 d12 d20 I skipped the d6/10 accidently

Thanks for the boost Zeal! Loot and Scoot Incorporated The last flickers of humanity toil away in the bowels of an endless megastructure built by insane Artificial Intelligences. Humanity may be gone, but the gig economy lives on... Check it out here: www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/5...
The cover for the TTRPG manual. The outer board is a light-yellow color and inside has a red title that reads: "LOOT AND SCOOT INCORPORATED" a center image, and a subtitle below that image that read: "COMPANY MANUAL". In the center image 4 diverse people are depicted in a corporate art style standing together and giving a thumbs up. They each have a painful smile on their faces. Each is wearing an orange jumpsuit. They are standing in a grey, industrial area. A depiction of the "MANAGER" this game's version of a Game Master (GM). The manager is sitting at a table with a GM screen in front of him that reads: "MANAGER" and has a skull depicted underneath. On the table, there are paper sheets, pencils and dice. There is a coffee cup mug that has text reading: "#1 FATE ARBITER". On the wall behind the manager are two posters. One has a worker in an orange jumpsuit hanging from a bar with text underneath that reads: "HANG IN THERE". The other has a bar chart with an upward arrow above the bars and text underneath reading: "PROFIT". The manager is wearing an orange suit with a black tie and white undershirt. He is putting his hands together in front of his chest. He has an evil smile on his face. The scene is very cartoony and resembles a somewhat generic corporate art style.
Two people in orange jumpsuits are standing on each side of a strange statue reminiscent of "Untitled 2004" by Japanese artist Izumi Kato which was used commonly to depict SCP-173. The statue is wearing a silly fake glasses/nose/mustache to hide its true identity. The people seem to be questioning what the statue is. The background scene appears to be inside a run-down building. Plaster is falling off the walls and bricks are exposed. The scene is very cartoony and resembles a somewhat generic corporate art style.

I’m really happy with how this came out. There’s so much work in going from something purely digital to something physical, but when you do it, it does feel really special.

Can I really not make token packs for folks on #Roll20 for them to use for free? It has to be at least $4.99? I'm a big fan of VTTs, so I've always made tokens of the artwork in my #TTRPGs for anyone to use and put them up as PWYW on DriveThru, but I was hoping to make it even easier.
A screenshot from the Roll20 publisher marketplace. It shows a title of the art pack, "Spore Friends Tokens" and is denoted as a token set. There is text stating "Cost must be at least $4.99" "Cost must end with '.99' or '.49'. A "submit for approval" button is greyed out. There are also buttons for "delete item" and "history".

I wanted to share some from the game my partner and I made together earlier this year. These are from "Spore Friends", a cozy, rules-lite, TTRPG where instead of rolling dice, you try to drop confetti onto targets. It's also where my profile pic comes from, Agy, the fly agaric Spore Friend.

#Weekendgaming, #DeltaGreen, #ImpossibleLandscapes Excited for my Impossible Landscapes game tonight! Still on the Night Floors. One cool thing I've done is instead of just having the players roll for searching Abigail's apartment, I made these interactable boards where the clues were hidden inside.

I realized I really ought to have a logo, so I spent a day learning a bit of Inkscape and doing some vector art. It's simple, and although I don't really know what I'm doing, I think it came out nicely! Also, big props to Inkscape for being open source and available to all! #inkscape #ttrpg
