GREAT example by Yuan Games is actually a fantastic example of what happens when you remove the obstacle that everyone thought was the biggest hurdle in building a game: needing to build a game engine Easier to build games… still very hard to build great games!

I was at @evernote.bsky.social when they started migrating to React Native in 2018. Against all advice from tech leads the SVP of engineering (coming from Amazon) pushed through. The quality of the Android app went downhill over the years not only performance wise.

There are 21 million Black people in the US. Fewer than 6% of us earn over $100K a year. The median net worth of Black households fluctuates between about $20K and $40K, depending on how much scamming happens that year (eg crypto, asset forfeiture). Black. People. Are. The. Working. Class.

Depends how in the weeds you want to get. I considered this option, but ended up building my own running TrueNAS with ZFS to get better hardware at a better $ value. At first I run it as my home server and storage, but eventually moved most services to different proxmox hardware.

More to say on burnout and I'm probably going to boost it a few times because folks need to hear it: Burnout is a form of brain damage. It happens when stress conditions persist until they damage our brains. It's an injury that needs to heal, not a weakness that needs to be pushed through.

I don’t mind a bit of each of these, and some diversity in the opinions I see in my feeds. The problem is so many of these topics create tribalism, obsession, and the discourse overwhelms everything else.

And is a standard requirement in modern dominant languages

Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 05/12/2024
My personal opinion is that even if competing editors popped up publicly, it would be a net positive, because folks will stick with editors they know over trying new languages. So a gateway for more to try Kotlin and graduate to IJ. A bigger ecosystem gives them more TAM, even if it’s not 100% of it

Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 05/12/2024
It has not been a priority for them yet. Their stance has been to make IntelliJ the best standalone experience. We don’t see them as directly competing, just a protocol for many tools to interact and use it. One of those could be other editors, but that’d need to be built & would have less features.

Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 05/12/2024
Editors and tooling integrations. The existing one is a great start as a POC, but a wrapper on the cli won't scale, so need a first class one built into the compiler like other languages have. Would be great for the overall ecosystem to grow too, but we have tactical need Internally.

And that might suck if you’re the only person in the office. Keep in mind that I’m in favor of remote work and autonomy in how to work, just recognizing it’s not universally a good thing for companies.

Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 04/12/2024
I don’t think it’s entirely about drive, that’s one part, but dismissive of other environmental factors that are especially prominent in high cost environments, like lack of good home working space without distractions.
210
Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 04/12/2024
The majority opinion seems to be negative on RTO. For many, I think it's about being forced losing autonomy vs them making decisions on what works for them. I'm split on it now, there's obvious value to both, and while some folks are responsible with autonomy, some abuse it. Hard to scale, I guess.

Ty Smith @tysmith.me · 04/12/2024
Before Uber had an RTO stance, my home team, which is split across regions but has a core group in SF, went into the office regularly. It was very energizing, since most of us worked together for years then and had a strong socially culture. Most of engineering didn't do that, and was later forced.

The trick for me was submitting to a large international conference under my company as a forcing function, and then doing many more talks over years until it became comfortable. Happy that I had a great dev rel friend there to help guide me through the process.

Interesting to see different starts. I had a much different one. Fortunately, I had plenty of opportunities to speak by doing Android at a hot Silicon Valley startup in 2012, but I had significant anxiety around public speaking, so I lacked a decent stage presence or presentation ability then.
