Authors!🚨 While you scramble for scarce $ 🤔 “Springer Nature reports revenue growth of 6.2%..and adjusted operating profit growth of 7.7%. They reported even more stunning submission growth of 30% and published article growth of 13%.” Publishing in society journals helps YOU not them👇🏻. Pass it on.

Now out @molbioevol.bsky.socialGenetic correlations summarize how traits covary, but they can hide different underlying architectures. Distinguishing those architectures can reveal distinct mechanisms generating—and potentially constraining—trait–trait relationships. academic.oup.com/mbe/advance-...

Consistent and idiosyncratic pleiotropy in shaping genetic correlations
Abstract. Pleiotropy, the phenomenon where a single mutation influences multiple phenotypic traits, creates genetic correlations that can constrain evoluti

Why grouping intralocus and interlocus phenomena under one umbrella of “sexual conflict” is a mistake. Insightful paper from @imprintedgene.bsky.social, @andygardner.bsky.social y.social, Tracey Chapman, and @jennyperry.bsky.social yperry.bsky.social. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

Sexual conflict and sexual pleiotropy
Abstract. Natural selection might favour brightly coloured males and drab females. A male and a female might disagree about whether to mate. Such tensions

Long-reads reveal 6X more guppy genes are sex-biased for splicing compared to short-reads. But male isoform richness mostly reflects transcriptional noise, not proteomic expansion. Beautiful analysis by @linley-sherin.bsky.social out now doi.org/10.64898/202...

Very happy to see our paper just published in @molbioevol.bsky.social highlighted: academic.oup.com/mbe/article/... Probably my favourite paper to be a part of and really fun working with some great people! Bedbugs are very gross but also very cool! Paper here: academic.oup.com/mbe/article/...

Highlight: Traumatic insemination and the molecular evolution of a novel reproductive organ in bed bugs
Sex can be complicated—just ask bed bugs. The bane of many conference goers, these blood-feeding parasitic insects mate via traumatic insemination, a repro

I know a lot of Drosophila flies. Outside the Hawaiian clade, D. prolongata is by far the coolest.

No models. No satellites. Just 50 years of Burgundy harvest dates: ~4.1 days earlier every decade. Climate change, written on a cellar wall. 🍷 🇫🇷 🧫

🚨 HEADS UP: If you haven't submitted a comment on the OMB proposal yet, there's still time - but it's running out! There are only 3 days left to push back against Russell Vought's attempt to give political appointees unprecedented control over federal research funding. Take Action: zurl.co/J92d9
Graphic from Stand Up for Science urging action on a federal funding proposal. Large text reads: "3 Days Left" and "Help Us Stop Vought From Destroying American Science." A portrait of Russell Vought appears beside the U.S. Capitol. A banner along the bottom reads: "Submit a comment on the OMB proposal | Link in bio to take action." The Stand Up for Science logo appears in the top left.

🚨 By July 13, submit your public comment to OMB on their proposed rule “Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance.” OMB won't extend the deadline. Science is at risk. OMB needs to hear factual, data-based examples of the impact of the changes. Comments must be submitted at buff.ly/MIzDI0h. 🧵⬇️

I am excited to tell you about our new study led by Tyler Audet and in collaboration with Stefan Lüpold's group. Below you see two species. On the right is Drosophila melanogaster. On the left, Drosophila prolongata. Notice the highly exaggerated legs of the males in D.p! doi.org/10.1093/evol...
Two panel image of Drosophila prolongata and Drosophila melanogaster. In the top panel is a female of Drosophila prolongata on the left and a female of Drosophila melanogaster on the right. It shows that D. prolongata females are somewhat larger than melanogaster, and have spotted wings. Importantly the legs are proportional in each species.

In the bottom panel are males. On the left is a Drosophila prolongata male which is larger than all the other individuals, and has highly exaggerated legs in terms of width and length, and also has black stripes. In contrast male Drosophila melanogaster are much smaller than all the others, with normally proportioned legs.
