Kirtland's Warblers are one of the rarest songbirds in N. America, because they are also the fussiest. They only breed in jack pines that are 5-15 years old, almost entirely in Michigan, with pockets in Wisconsin and Ontario, and winter in the Bahamas. See alt text for more #birds #birding
Close to extinction, there are now about 4,800 thanks to forest management practices in Michigan. Simcoe County, Ontario proved that if you build it, they will come - they created the habitat just northwest of Barrie, and the birds found it! I've seen them before in Michigan, yesterday was my first time seeing them in Ontario! Here he is on a day snag, in profile view, looking left with his head tipped back, singing his heart out. Upperparts are steely blue-gray, while underparts are yellow. He has white eye arcs.
