Phew, the news is dark. Here’s a moment of beauty to catch your breath 🌿
The sun sets in a layer of yellow sky at the horizon and the blue sky and pink clouds above and a line of trees silhouetted and a dark stone wall in the foreground. It’s very peaceful.

Passed my aquatic vegetation identification quiz. Here’s some pondweed.

Alright everybody, time to text the teachers in your life. The fall semester is open at SkypeAScientist and we are ready to match classrooms, scout troops, library groups, and more with scientists! Tell the educators in your life, and send them to SkypeAScientist.com
A frog uses its comically long tongue to catch a fleeing fly and the words say “send this to a teacher” pointing right. Then under the tongue it says “Skype a scientist matches classrooms with scientists for free Q&As” and there’s a little pond scene with lily pads and spatterdock flowers and a rock with a snail on it and a salamander with the words get a match at Skype scientist.com

Hey, do me a favor and do an internet search for "free fridge" and your town's name. And then go drop some stuff off when you have some food you're not gonna eat. Got some takeout with an extra wonton soup you're not gonna eat? Take it to the free fridge. Someone needs it. Seriously.

A vibrant sunset over the Pacific ocean. The sky is blue at the top, but along the horizon it’s vivid orange and yellow, bathing the clouds, water, and beach in a pink and orange glow. On a large boulder is the silhouette of a child holding a fishing pole.

It’s not often I miss my old job, but rad-former-coworker-finds-two-Delta-green-ground-beetles is absolutely one of those times.
Fingers holding a clear plastic cube with two Delta green ground beetles inside. They’re gorgeous and look like tiny emeralds.

It’s hideous. I messed up a bunch. I tried to knit continental for the first time. I had a bunch of horrible migraines. I didn’t use the right size needles. But I had fun making it and pulling it apart afterward so I can practice again. 🧶
A raggedy-ass green knit square that kind of says FUCK in the middle of it, with all sorts of mistakes in the knitting. It’s laying on top of a paper pattern for how to make it.

Remember that you are more likely to become disabled than not. You can be disabled by illness, injury, climate disasters, war, police brutality, unmitigated pandemics, lack of access to healthcare, etc. Disability justice is for us all, and it’s foundational to all other forms of justice.

A sunset memory, reminding me of the beauty and good out there.
A sunset over the Pacific Ocean, lighting the water orange, erupting the blue sky with bursts of yellow and orange and turning the clouds pink. There is a tiny silhouette of a person stand up paddle boarding. It was the most spectacular sunset I’ve ever seen.

Spending some of 2025’s end at “nightmare rock” felt fitting.
Me! Wearing a black top, black leggings, black shoes, and tall white socks, and sitting on a large rock. The rock is so big that I look like an ant sitting on it. The rock has a face painted on it with a wide open red mouth with pointy white teeth and big white eyes with blue irides and long black eyelashes. One eye has a star around it like Paul Stanley in Kiss. In the background is a blue sky with a few feathery white clouds and more massive rocks.

A hand holding a clump of green leaves with some brown spots. On one leaf is an endangered Achatinella sowerbyana snail. It is smaller than the nails of the fingers holding the leaf. The first whirls of the snail’s shell from the aperture are yellow green and the whirls at the apex of the cone shaped shell are white, all with a brown edge that follows the spiral grooves.

There is a lot going on that’s out of my control and sometimes feels overwhelming. I’ve started darning holes in my socks to give my brain breaks from it all (and also I haven’t gotten paid in over a month). You can probably guess which sock was done after I had a two day long migraine versus not. 🧶
A hand holding two grey and white socks folded in half so that the bottom of the socks face the camera. Both socks have lime green and teal woven patches on their grey heels, one woven patch looks much more chaotic and uneven than the other.

Happy Monday! Please enjoy this photo of a cute kangaroo rat.
A close up photo of hands gently holding a small fuzzy brown and white kangaroo rat by the scruff of its neck. Sunlight shines into the picture from the top right and the person's hands have magenta and neon green nail polish. In the background is blurred dirt ground and vegetation.

A video from when I was a GS-3 doing bird surveys. That's right, a GS-3. I also had to pay rent to the Army Corps for the FEMA trailer I lived in that flooded when it rained. My first paid gov job.

Will I be illegally fired this week?! Who knows! But here's a picture of me with a giant tree that will outlast us all!
Me! Standing on a platform in front of "Big Tree", a massive coast redwood. I'm holding my arms out wide to emphasize what a teeny tiny itty bitty baby I am next to this giant tree. A sign says Big Tree is 286 feet tall, 23.7 feet in diameter, 74.5 feet in circumference, and an estimated 1500 years old.
