*stumbling in, caked in grime, clothing frayed and with a thousand yard stare* It's bad news. This still isn't the year of Linux on the desktop

A Penguin Break
Published March 22, 2025 8:44 Hey, fellow Linux lovers. It's been a while since my last post on New Years day. I had a lot of fun writing it and researching for it, even if the concept of "the year of the Linux desktop" is super overdone in the community. 2025 has already been an odd year and I've got some big life changes and projects underway.

Apparently there's a scam now which has a fake captcha (or uses a real captcha with stuff added to the page around it) where it asks you to press windows + r and then ctrl + v and then enter as the last step to run some shit it put on your clipboard Don't do that...

Both on Windows and in Linux I am in a command line or utility frequently, trying to fix something or change configs. Even after recently loading a Win7 VM to house some 90s games reminded me of how many barriers you run into. I'm starting to think Linux might handle running them better 😆

In the hundreds of online microcommunities around Linux, you'll find the occasional RTFM prick (and, tbf, an actual manual does usually *exist* and may have your answers), but more often than that people really helping to solve your problem, with all confidence that it is *solvable*

Even I experience the "I just want shit to work right now" with Linux. I've got a migraine and my blue light filter stopped working on one monitor and I just sighed and restarted my machine. It didn't persist so it was probably a related service but I'm just like... Not right now, damn it.

I get the privilege of prepping someone to switch from Windows 10 to a Linux distro in the next month or so. I'm also in conjunction going to be working on my Linux newbie guide. You'd better believe I'm going to be detailing the switch in my guide!

As a senior Linux professional, I have to admit that sometimes you have to put off updating the jinglehopper until you can do without the beebeehams for long enough to slay the jabberwocky.

I've seen this shared a few times recently. Check it out! I've planned to do my own write up on getting away from Adobe as well, but now I might not need to... At least not for a while heh.

I actually swapped just yesterday to Linux Mint, and first of all, it's a hell of a lot easier both to swap and to use than I ever thought. Second of all, I'm noticing huge performance improvements from my computer. Do it man, swap, it took me all of 45 minutes to learn and do

I think it's kind of funny that when I was a teen I would hear mention of Linux and think it was some "wild foreign fantasy computer thing" and now I'm obsessed '-' Thanks to my idiot young self for randomly installing Parrotsec out of curiosity, because that changed everything for me lol

I'm so used to editing on Premiere Pro that I thought it would take me ages to get acclimated to anything else, but nope. Kdenlive is a pretty awesome alternative on Linux. Got the hang of it within a half hour of peeking around and editing a project. :D

My beloved Acer Aspire S5-371T that's been running Fedora for years seems to have finally kicked the bucket. Or at least it seems like the mobo header for the m.2 is not functioning. Found that out after a new m.2 couldn't be booted to. New board is around $140. QQ

Linux users of all experience levels, what made you want to try Linux? For me, I thought the idea of having a different operating system/kernel than what I was used to (Windows) sounded so cool. I was curious how it worked, what made it different, and what I could do with it.

Gahhhh I'm still fighting an internal battle over whether or not I should get a steam deck On one hand, this. And the ability to easily have my games (plus a mini Linux computer) with me.. But the price. And the fact that when I have time to game, I'm already at home and can just use my desktop.

I have had an Acer Aspire S5 13 sleekbook since around 2017 and I still love it. Its paint is scratched up and it has some nicks but it's top tier still. Have it running Fedora now. :) Also I'm still rocking a 2700x in my desktop 👀 I can't let go apparently

My favorite feature of the Google Pixel 8 Pro is when the Pixel Launcher stops responding so you can't close any of your background apps, which forces you have to open settings, search for pixel launcher, go to app info, and force stop it. This happens almost every day 🙃

Anyone had issues installing Pop! _OS 24.04 w/ Cosmic on a VM? Tried once so far and ran into an issue where cosmic-greeter failed to start prior to install. Haven't looked into it a ton yet, but did see some talk of potential issues. Wondering if anyone had similar/different experiences to share.

How many times do I have to keep letting my cat out before she realizes the snow isn't going away? She tries to go out in it (presumably with a mental middle finger directed at me) then after about 10 seconds hightails it back for the door. We've done this about six times already today. 🐈

Also, speaking of this, hot take: a massive problem with why the average person won't switch to Linux is cause Linux users make it confusing AF, toxic beefs between users of different distros, and they do the FGC 'help' tactic of "Just do this" when it's not that simple that's a cop out answer
